Obituary of Doreen Barrett

10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the LDS Church in Yelm Doreen Barrett Doreen R. Barrett, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, passed away quietly at her home in Yelm, Washington, on May 15, 2011. She was born to Pearl Gordon and James Melrose Johnson on September 3, 1932, in Price, Utah. Doreen graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951. There she met her eternal sweetheart, William Joseph Barrett. The two were married in the summer of 1952. They moved to Seattle as William pursued his professional education. Doreen assisted in supporting their young family as a secretary at Boeing. Three sons were born during the seven years in Seattle, and then they moved to Tacoma where the first daughter was born. Tacoma was home for the next 10 years. Pursuing additional education for William in 1969 would take the family to New Jersey where they would add the last child, a daughter. After two years of educational training, they returned to Tacoma where they would make their home until 1982, when they made a decision to move to Yelm, Washington. Doreen and her daughters enjoyed time together and became very involved in showing horses. They could often be seen in the motor home pulling their horse trailer up or down the highways to participate in horse shows from Oregon to Canada. Doreen loved the gospel and spent her days beautifying the world around her through her many beautiful oil paintings, amazing stained glass panels, and extended talents into the theatrical arts. While she had a beautiful soprano voice, she preferred the director's chair to the stage. She was probably best known for her stage productions for the LDS Church. All together, she produced seven plays through which she shared her love and dedication to her Savior and His Gospel. Doreen is survived by her husband, Dr. William J. Barrett; her brother, Kay Johnson; her children, Dr. W. Joseph Barrett, Bradley Barrett, Robert Barrett, Deneen Barrett-Rothfels and Danae Leavitt. She is also survived by her 21 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Doreen has left behind a huge legacy of love and kindness that will be passed on for many generations.
