Skipper was my friend, my mentor, and her commitment to honesty and truth no matter how hard it was to say or hear made me respect her more than anyone of her generation.

By now I am sure that Skipper is leading the angelic choir in a good round of White Coral Bells and then speeding up the beat with a touch of Kookabarra. Many fond memories of Skipper’s calm influence during my adult Girl Scout years.

I met Marge a couple of times at Eleanor’s House in the Netherlands , and later we went sailing in Turkey. It was a pleasure knowing her, really having fun and an embarresment to experience that an “old” lady did swim fast(er). All the best and greetings, Berry

Laura, Time just stopped for a minute when I read of your mom’s passing. I am sure you have heard from many many people of the wonderful experiences they had with your mom. She was definitely one of a kind…. a person who really did leave the world a better place because of all that she did. I met your mom in about 1974 when I was just a little punk ass kid with really no direction. I worked as a summer counselor for her at St. John’s one week camp…. and that was an experience, because of your mom’s guidance, that changed my life. She encouraged me to continue working with kids (still doing so almost 40 years later) and suggested I apply at the Multnomah outdoor school where she had worked. Her encouragement and guidance helped me to find my direction and calling in life. The last time I saw Skipper was when I interviewed her for the WWII documentary I was working on. I had a wonderful time learning more about her history that I did not know. Tom Brokaw got it right when he named her generation “The Greatest Generation” and your mom was definitely one of the greatest people. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during your time of grieving . Day is done… gone the sun… Farewell Skipper

Dear Marge, April 29, 2013. I want to let you know how much I appreciate your being in my life. I also want to thank you for being such a good friend to my family – both in the States and here in the Netherlands, and especially for being such a good friend to me. Thank you for being there for my mother when she really needed a friend to lean on. Thank you for being there for her when she needed a friend to laugh with, to have adventures with and to share joy and sorrow with. Thank you for telling me that my mother loved me, when I really didn’t know that she did. Thank you for being with my sister and me when my mother was dying. Thank you for becoming a good friend to me, coming sailing with us in Turkey, looking after my family when I was in hospital and me when I got out. Thank you for all the sound advice you gave on everything from baking to banking, for the joyful conversations on all manner of subjects, for telling us about American Girl dolls and for knitted hats and scarves which delighted both me and Emily and helped her to understand the art of giving and of receiving. Thank you for the philosophical discussions with Eric and our friends, for showing us what it means to live a good life as an adult and to age gracefully and with dignity. Thank you for being such a good example to us. We will miss you. I will miss you. Lots of love and a hug, Eleanor

I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Marjorie. I have heard a great deal about Marjorie from her daughter Jill and her granddaughter Heather. I just read her obituary and am amazed by this amazing woman. My major regret is that I never had the opportunity to meet her in person. I believe I would have liked her very much.

Marjorie was an energetic, accomplished and caring person. She inspired many with her physically active life, particularly in her later senior years with her swimming gold medals won at the senior games. From her obituary, one could tell she was a very altruistic person and had a passion for the outdoors and teaching youth how to appreciate healthy living in nature’s realm.

Skipper and her daughter, Laura, have had a huge positive influence in my life. I don’t know who I would have become without them. I learned so much, and still do, from both of them. Today with the news of skippers passing, I’m flooded with memories of kindness and humor and support. I’m so grateful today for those memories and all the adventures I got to experience. Of course I’m crying when I think if them but I also feel very proud and happy to have been someone in skippers life.

I am so sorry for your loss. She was a dear friend to my father over the past 20 + years. I was deeply touched when she came to California to celebrate his life with our family and I know that they are together again in heaven. She was a funny, beautiful, smart lady. I will carry fond memories of her forever.

I admired Skipper in many ways. She was physically and mentally tough. When Canoe Island French camp was in its infancy Skipper came on the scene to whip things into shape. For ten years she guided us all with a steady hand. She led a remarkable life in service to her fellow human beings. We will miss her.
