Betty Slate

Obituary of Betty Jo Slate

Betty Jo (Skidmore) Slate passed away peacefully at St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington, on August 25, 2014. Betty was born in a small Texas town on December 17, 1927 to Earl Skidmore and Easter Belle Ward. Her family moved to Kitsap County when she was a girl. There she met a young Georgia sailor, Willie Joe Slate. They married and had two sons, Joe and Dwayne. They raised their family while working, until moving from Bremerton to Olympia in 1970. After a rewarding career with the Department of Employment Security, Betty enjoyed her retirement. She loved traveling with grandkids and friends, and playing bridge, especially with “the girls” from Bremerton. She was very proud to be a Master Gardener. She also enjoyed making her opinions known to each and every one. She was a “pistol.” Betty is survived by sister, Patsy; brother, Tom; her sons, Joe of Silverdale, and Dwayne (Sherie Story) of Olympia; four grandchildren, Rick, Wendy, Lorne and Jolynn of Kitsap County; 12 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Will; sister, Theda; and granddaughter, Alexis. Please leave memories of Betty or condolences for her family in the Guestbook below.
