Gary Russell was a good human being, a good worker and leader of the college security/police service, and a devoted family man. He carried himself with dignity and representated his staff with understanding and kindness. He had empathy for troubled students and had a keen sense of when enough was enough. We need more people in our organizational lives like Gary. My condolescences to his family, friends and many colleagues. Gary, I will always remember you for the gentleman you were and I wish you the warmth of the sun all around you and a gentle breeze at your back for your journey. With peace and affection,Gary. Marilyn, Although I haven’t seen you since High School and didn’t know your husband, I just want to send my condolences to you and your family. At our age it seems that we are losing loved ones more frequently and it doesn’t get easier as each one passes. I wish you all the strength to continue to be happy and healthy.

A handsome devil he was, and a good cop. We often had conversations together about life, relationships, and kids. He survived a lot of crap while a “Greener”. …..would’ve been great to ski with him and his family, but I guess that ain’t gonna happen. Take care Gare!! Pete

I got to know Gary when I was a secretary in the student affairs office at Evergreen. He was warm, funny, and open minded and open hearted. My day was always better when we had a chat. He helped me to feel welcome in the administration and he was always candid and smart about what was going on that college. He was dedicated to Evergreen and cared a great deal about the students. He often worried about them in the kindest of ways. I was lucky to know him. He helped me to understand what it meant to help make an organization a wonderful place to be and work.

I remember Gary was one of the first people I met when I came to work at The Evergreen State College in 1982. I still work there, and he always wanted to get everyone together, whether it was a Christmas Party at his house or a Barbecue at Tumwater Falls Park. He was always trying to show off gadgets and as a gadget person myself, I really enjoyed that.
He always was good with words and wanted everyone to be happy. I haven’t seen him in a few years, but I know he made a lot of people happy just being in their lives.

I worked with Gary at Evergreen Police Department. Gary always took great photos of me and my police dog Lucy. When Gary retired, he gave me a 6 inch or so green plant from his office that he always forgot to water. It looked dead, but he wanted me to have it because he knew I always teased him about the plant. I took it home and nursed it back to health. I still have the plant, and it has grown to over 5 feet tall. I think of Gary often because of that plant. So sorry to hear about Gary’s passing. Gary was always a kind and even keeled person.

Gary, You will be so missed by all who knew you, but especially by those who loved you deeply. You gave me many wonderful memories, for which I am grateful. We survived the “quake of ’64” in Anchorage thanks to your leadership and advice to “get home for dinner”; otherwise, we might not have made it out of J. C. Penney’s that fateful day. The best gift of all, was the gift of motherhood; Michelle and Jennifer have blessed us their entire lives. Most of all, I am grateful and thankful that through the years, we could share our daughters and their good times together, and that you blessed them with Marilyn, the most wonderful step mother any child could have. I always knew our girls were loved and cared for deeply. Thank you Gary for the times we knew and the memories we made that will live on in our girls. I know you are with your loved ones gone before you. You were a good man Gary.
