Vernette Remmen

Obituary of Vernette Marie Remmen

Vernette was born July 9, 1921 in Merrill, Wisconsin to Raymond and Inger Cotey. She was the fourth of seven children. The family moved to California in 1926 when Vernette was five. She graduated from the 8th grade in Arcata, California. The family moved to Washington in 1935 and eventually settled in Olympia, where she graduated from Olympia High School in 1940. Vernette and her sister Virginia joined the Women’s Air Corps during World War II. Vernette served the duration of the war. During her service, she worked in photography, and played for the Women’s Air Corps competitive softball team. After the war, she came back to Olympia and worked for Washington State Employment Security. She became reacquainted with classmate David Remmen and they were married on February 19, 1947. Vernette and Dave had two children, Sherry and Eirk. Vernette was a homemaker, and then went to work for the Olympia School District as a cook and retired from that position. In 1991, she lost her husband, Dave, and spent her remaining years on her own in their family home, focusing her life and love on her family. Vernette treasured spending time with her grandchildren, Tia and Dave. She also enjoyed reading, working in her yard, shopping and eating out. Vernette’s family brought her much joy.
