I’m sorry to hear of your loss of Jim, which I just read about in the paper today. I was your neighbor on 14th Ave., N.W., in Olympia prior to your move to Shelton. In the short time I knew Jim and your family before you moved away, I thought Jim was a very smart guy, a real gentleman, and a great neighbor! It’s hard to believe it’s been 32 years since you moved away. I still own the house next to where yours was–the cute yellow house. Things have changed so much on 14th since you left, with speeding traffic and all kinds of growth. I missed Jim’s and your presence on the street, and hope Jim had a good life in his retirement prior to his illness. He had an interesting life and touched many lives. I wish you all well. When my Dad passed away in 2004, we also had Funeral Alternatives help us with the Service and with Dad–they did a good service for Dad, and made the process less painful than it could have otherwise been.

I remember our days at Seattle Trust & Savings Bank. Here’s a story that you may not know about. One day Duane Gugenmus took a phone call from Key Bank in Rhode Island. They asked us to do a courtesy repossession. He passed it on to Jim who went and got the car. It was only a short distance from the office. It took less than 15 minutes to do it. Key Bank called back and said they forgot to give us the color of the car. Duane said it was red and that we already had it. This blew their minds that we (Jim) were so quick. So they called Bill Bailargeron, the President of Seattle Trust to commend Duane for his speed with handling the repo. But all Duane did was take the phone call, that’s it. Of course, at the next Board meeting Duane was made a corporate office (not Jim – that came later). The whole point of the story is that this was the first contact that Key Bank had with Seattle Trust. They later bought out Seattle Trust and perhaps it was this incident that caught the eye of the officials at Key Bank and led to the merger.
