Dear Family — This photo is a perfect representation of the Marda we knew and remember. Always a smile, a twinkle in her eye, and a readiness to help others with kindness. We know all to well, also, of her struggles these past few years and are at peace with her now being at peace. We’ve already heard how wonderful the memorial was and are sad that we could not have been there to share it. Marda will be missed but not forgotten in our Evergreen memories.

Dear Marda’s family,
I attended the memorial for Marda in Shelton and wanted to let her family know how blessed I felt. I have known Marda since I was a student at Southside school and she the mom of a classmate. I got to know her and her family much more at the memorial and how truly special she was. I look forward to seeing her again someday in heaven with Jesus whom she faithfully served.

Marda’s family – I was lucky enough to work with Marda for many years here at Evergreen – she was always so helpful whenever I needed something from the bookstore – and was involved as an alum with our many alumni events. She will be missed.
PS I am sorry I will not be able to make her memorial service, but please know I am thinking of her.
Rest in peace Marda,
Debbie Garrington

Marda was that long lost friend from the day I met her in 1985. She, knowing
that I was a woman of little faith never bugged me about it: but Marda would often say a small quote or a short story full of what she believed and it nudged me in to deeper thought and maybe enlightenment. I treasured my time with her and will miss her very much.
I talked with her, briefly, two weeks ago and she just said ” it is hard”. I told her I loved her and that she would be Home soon.
I will hold her and her family close to my heart. Her children and especially one certain son in law have provided her with so much loving care and I know how important that was to her. Love, Dee

Marda was so very kind and helpful to me as I tried to make sense out of how to do almost everything connected to my program budget, books and supplies. She always welcomed me, smiling and knowing that I was in some predicament or other. I loved seeing her and felt she modeled the kind of Evergreen community member we all emulated. She made an enormous contribution by her warm spirit, kindness and knowledge. My condolences to her family, she will be missed by us all.

I first met Marda at The Evergreen State College Bookstore where she worked and became friends with my mother, Marda was there through a great deal of my Growing up and on many occasions was there to assist with Home work, or just talk if i needed it, she was always very kind and never Sugar coated her responses to any questions that may have come up. Everyone that met her loved her and I know that she is with her father guiding us to this day, all my love you you and your entire family.

We are so sorry to hear of Marda’s sickness and now death from the cancer that ravaged her last two years. She was a wonderful friend to us (and so many) when she was at Evergreen, and I loved hearing stories of her life after retirement from her daughter Lorri. Reading the story of her life – all the years – was touching. What an active and historical story – woven into the fabric of the Pacific Northwest. We will miss Marda.

For the 14 years that Marda worked in the TESC Bookstore, there wasn’t a day when I shopped there that she didn’t have an ebullient smile and a good word to say . . . especially if she was either just getting ready to go to Hawaii or just having come back from having visited there, wearing a muumuu and beaming a smile as colorful as the dress she wore. No matter how bad a day I might have been having, an encounter with Marda always lifted my spirits.
