Douglas Mason

Obituary of Douglas Colbourne Mason

Douglas Colbourne Mason was born on June 24, 1948 in New York City. He passed away at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington on June 9, 2014 after a long and courageous fight against Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Doug grew up in Winter Park, Florida and moved to southern California in 1966 to attend California Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1973 with a Master of Science in Chemistry. Doug married Linda in 1972 while finishing his degree at CalTech. They moved to Orange County in 1973 where they raised their four daughters. The family affectionately refers to their house in Tustin as the “Mason Zoo” because of the large number of children and pets they cared for over the years. Doug worked in the field of technology for over 40 years, retiring from the Intel Corporation in 2013. Doug loved his work and, had it not been for his illness, he would still be working today. Doug was very active in their two churches; he served as a deacon at Melodyland Christian Center in Anaheim, California and as a tech engineer at Evergreen Christian Community. He also enjoyed photography and classical music, and kept up on the trendiest technology. After his diagnosis, Doug’s treatment for the AML included a stem cell transplant he received at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). During this time, he willingly participated in research studies in the hopes that others would benefit from his struggle. Doug’s family requests that donations be made in his name to SCCA to support their research or to the Evergreen Christian Community Cares Ministry. Doug is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughters, Rebecca, Deborah, Amy and Sara; grandchildren, Colbourne, Rachel, Matthew, Haley, Owen, Eamonn and Zachary; and by his three siblings, Barbara, Ken and Glenn.
