Penny Johnson

Obituary of Penny Jean Johnson

Penny Jean Johnson died Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash. Penny was born November 24, 1943 to Earl and Evelyn Betts in Kelso, Wash. She had one brother, Jerry, who passed away several years ago. She is survived by her husband, Don Johnson; her niece, Daphne Fritz; her husband, Jeff; and their son, Dawson. Penny attended PLU and graduated from the University of Washington. She worked for the WEA, Education Commission of States and 25 years for the law firm Perkin Coie. While at Perkins Coie, she was a member and president of Executive Women International. She also was a member of Kelso’s PEO, at the urging of her mother. Penny retired from Perkin Coie in 1996 so she would have more time to play golf. Penny was a very fun-loving person and addicted to sports. She played golf several times a week. She beat most men she played with. She loved all sports; as she used to say, she didn’t know there was anything other than the Portland Trail Blazers on the radio when she was growing up in Kelso. She was a Husky football season ticket holder since 1965 and a day-one Seahawk season ticket holder. If she wasn’t attending a game, she watched them on TV, and ran football and basketball pools for her friends. She always said she would never be bored or lonely because she had her love of sports. She also loved animals. Penny enjoyed her two dogs, Salty, who lived to be over 15, and Zorro, who is 3 years old. She regularly contributed money to the humane society and animal rescue.
