Dear James Family,
I’m very sad but honored to read my friend’s obituary along with his wonderful remembrances of our times in the South Pacific Theater. My daughter & I were going through boxes yesterday after moving 3 years ago back to Michigan from Florida. We went into a box which I hadn’t opened since before moving some 11 years before. Boy oh boy I’m sure sad about that. I’ve lost contact with many shipmates. We started calling a couple of names on the list and I’ve been able to speak (somewhat with my hearing difficulty) with a couple of our buddies. I’m thankful for that.
To the family of this dear Captain John James I send my heartfelt condolences and grand cheers for a wonderful and honorable life well lived. Your father was incredibly kind, generous and thoughtful to me & my wife during our reunion in Seattle. It was so very much appreciated. What a great man. I will remember him with admiration.
Sincerely, Paul DiNofrio

A friend dropped off Mr. James’ obituary for me to read as we were both former Naval Officers who had served in U.S. Navy Destroyers (the “tin can navy”) and we often speak of our experiences. I am also a resident of West Chester, PA where the Westminster Presbyterian Church is that hosted the memorial service.
I realize this entry will not be read as so much time has passed but I felt compelled to document how I read Mr. James’ account of surviving a typhoon in WWII and how much admiration I have for him for his accomplishments and the incredible and selfless contributions he made to his community and his country. I get a real sense of his character and dedication to his family. I did not know him but am proud to be a fellow destroyerman of this exceptional person. Please accept my thanks and the thanks of many others on behalf of a nation grateful for his life and service.
Norm
