I will miss Dean dearly. I had the true pleasure of seeing him each and every day at Woodland. For 4 years he had tried to teach me to grow the perfect tomato and onion. He even built me growing platforms and plotted my garden at home. I arrived at work a few days ago and found his homemade blueprints on my desk of the raised flower beds. Thank you so very much to his family for that gift. I will always treasure it. Thank you for sharing him with all of us at Woodland.

We are so lucky to have had him for a Grandfather, role model, and tomato purveyor. He taught us how to be decent individuals through actions and not just words. I’d be hard pressed to find anyone more loyal, good natured, and down-right motivated to make things happen than G-pa. It is wonderful to read about his great life and to see posts from friends new and old. He blessed us all with love and friendship.

We were so very sorry to learn of Dean’s death. He was always such a kind gentleman who enjoyed giving his time in so many ways. He was so easy to converse with and share time. Also, enjoyed working with him while he was active at church, too. He was also so very fortunate to be so close with his loving family. He is missed.

Wow! Dean was ‘The Man’ I loved it when he came into the Lab to visit! I also got to see him the last couple of Christmas seasons when my godchildren would have their piano recital at the retirement facility. Will miss giving him a bad time!

We only recently met Dean (and Dottie) – they lived in the apartment across from my mother-in-law at Woodland Retirement Community. They were good friends for just about two years. In recent days, Verna had needed some help with a bottle cap and had walked across the hall around 7pm to ask Dean to help her open it. Dean answered the door only to find that Verna had turned, thinking he wasn’t home, and fell to the floor – falling terribly hard to her head. Dean was kind enough to call 911 and cry out toward the lobby for help and stayed with her until family arrived. He was always helping her with something – it was as if their friendship was meant to be since Dean’s wife Dottie and Verna’s husband Ray are also ‘friends’ over at Bonaventure Memory Care. When we returned to ask Dean for more information about Verna’s fall, he mentioned that he was due for heart surgery that next week. When I called to Artistry in Flowers to see how it had gone for him, I was told it had been postponed. We are sorry for your loss – he is no longer suffering. But – even with his health issues, he was a servant to those around him. Verna has returned to Woodland now and is saddened to hear of Dean’s passing, but knows he is in heaven and is sure the Lord has assigned him to His favorite garden. Thank you for sharing your Dad with my MIL and with us. A very kind man, indeed.

The obituary expresses Dean’s personality and interests so accurately.
We were members of the Evergreen Good SAMs camping club, locally. We enjoyed many good times with Dean and Dottie, both here and in Yuma.
Dean taught us how to make BBQ containers out of coffee cans and two of our grand sons mowed lawn for them. Lots of good memories. He and I had a visit at Bonaventure, just a few weeks ago.
Our sympathy to the family. You were dear to him.

Dear Alan, Becky and the rest of Dean’s family,
We were so very sorry to learn that Dean passed away and extend to you our deepest sympathy. We met Dean in late October 1998 at our office just after he and Dorothy were married. It’s been a pleasure and privilege working with them these past many years and sharing fellowship at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. We give thanks for the life and faith of Dean Hortin. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn his loss.
