I'm sorry to learn of this tragedy and on this Memorial day when i remember my grandfather and other family members (as well as so many unselfish Americans who gave their lives for us), I cam across a potential post by Roger regarding my mom's cousin (so my cousin once removed) -- Ronald Winters. Roger may have served as with Ron (who was a 1st Lieutenant) in the 39th Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade. Ron Winters perished during combat in August of 1967 at age 23...
I wanted to reach and talk to Roger about Ron and to thank him for creating the short memorial page and thank him for his service

I still remember the day that I asked you to give me away – you seemed surprised that I would ask because, of course you would give me away, you were my dad. I felt I should ask – it seemed appropriate. We both cried. I am grateful to have had you in my life – loving, supporting, encouraging, celebrating. I have been thinking about the last couple of months of your life – the circumstances were senseless. But, I remember the day that I told you that I love you and you responded with, “I love you…all of you kids…and the grand kids…you’re what I fight for” We all have felt that love. I am so grateful for you and miss you so much…

In May of 1962, Basic Training at Ft. Polk began anew. Roger was the Company Commander – I was the Company Executive Officer for Company B. I learned a lot from Roger and he became a great friend while we oversaw the Basic Training of 3 cycles of recruits. We moved on to other positions – I left active duty in July 1964. We renewed our friendship in 2003 when I found Roger still playing tennis through Google search. We have kept in touch since that time. I was shocked to hear of his death and will miss him. To paraphrase Roger’s email to me when he learned of our 43 year old son’s death – “God does things in his own way – not ours. Even though we know he is in a better place, with God, and without pain and suffering, it sometimes does little to help those who are here”. I will pray for you Sandy and your family in hopes that you will receive some peace and understanding. Thank you, Roger, for your service and friendship.

I met Roger in high school at Valley Forge Military Academy and he has been like a “brother” to me ever since. We share many fond memories together and I miss him greatly. I’ll be there in Olympia to say “good-by” on June 7th.

Roger was one of the friendliest guys I have ever known. We met in Company I-2 at West Point. Roger was always a physically fit and active athlete, and a wonderful chap in every way. He and Sandy were fortunate to have each other and their families for love and support. His was a tragic accident not of his making. I know he will be greatly missed.

We miss you so much. Thank you for loving our children and loving us. If I had to get a second dad, at least I got one as good as you.
