I’ll never forget the day I met Matt. He was the first person I met in the courtyard at AIT in SA. We became instant friends. He was so sweet and so funny and we became the best of friends. We were always together just hanging out or with our group of friends having a great time! So sad to hear of his passing. He had such a big heart and loved to talk about his son and about his family back at home. He was a wonderful man, father, soldier, and friend. RIP my sweet friend.

I’m sad to hear that a dear Army buddy has passed away. I was stationed with Matt at Walter Reed we were in the Radiology Department together he was a student there and I was a permanent party Tech. I will always remember the times we shared going to our spot called Spicey delight. It was a Jamaican joint. We used to get the Jerk CHICKEN SANDWICH and DRINK Guinness together. I will never forget that later on in our military careers we met again at Ft. Lewis. Matt was the first person I saw when I got to Washington. He met me at the mall with his then fiance. Matt also opened up his home to me for several weeks until I found a place to live. I will always remember our time playing Madden and Socom on playstation. I could never understand how he would beat me in Madden with the RAIDERS of all teams Lol. I will surely miss him!! Rest in Paradise Soldier!!

I had the privilege of working with Cunningham at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the Cardiology Dept. He was the life of the party at work. He kept us laughing. Very respectable young man. He always spoke his mind. May he rest in peace. My condolences and prayers to the family. Gone but not forgotten. HOOAH! I salute a true soldier.

It has been years since I met Matthew; he was a young boy at the time and was at his Grandmother Millie Cunningham’s home in Kennewick WA. Millie is my sister and I was at her home for a sad occasion, it was the passing of her husband Johnny, the grandfather of Matthew.
Years have passed since my only encounter with this 3-1/2 year old boy and his family. Millie was so proud of him and always brought his name to the front of our telephone conversations. Through the years I could feel her pride and at times anxiety about Matthew. She personally suffered the hard times and pronounced the good news about the accomplishments of my nephew.
Matthew is a hero to our country by his dedication to his mission as soldier. More than that, he is a hero to our family. He had the courage to face his fate and say goodbye with love to those that surrounded him before his passing. Millie shared this with me too.
God Bless you Matthew T. Cunningham.

I am so very sorry to hear of Matt’s passing, I pray all of you have strenth through this process of life, I know that I have not been around in years, but i still consider all of you part of my extended family.
It is unfortunate that all these thoughts and prayers are just words on a paper, but my feelings are real. Matt was a great kid, always had a smile on a face, and always a passion of life.
I love you all, and miss you all very much, God be with you, through healing

I met Matt as a teenager , he often hung out at our house with my son Dino and Dale and Blaise. They did all the things teenagers did , sometimes much to my dismay but in spite of it all they grew up into fine young men. Matt however was special to me because of his strength, courage and commitment. He came to the house one day after his brain surgery, the scars from the surgery apparent and he told me that the one thing he wanted to do was go back to Iraq. That was where he was supposed to be, defending our country, defending all of us. This is a young man everyone should be proud of. You will be deeply missed by all.

Matt was a wonderful human being, large in spirit, witty, kind, inquisitive, hard working, intelligent, brave, and courageous, just to name of few of his many attributes. Our sons and daughters in uniform could not be more fortunate than to have had Sergeant First Class Matt Cunningham as their leader. My deepest and heartfelt sympathies to Matt’s family and friends.

Matthew was in my Gender and Ethnicity class I attended at St. Martin’s University. I had not been in any classes with him before. We connected when we discovered that we had both been in the Army. Gender and Ethnicity was not an easy class, but Matthew helped many with his positive attitude and constant encouragement. I remember when I wore my new cowboy boots to class, and Matt made a point of telling me how much he like them. It is funny, because every time I wear them, I think of him. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and am saddened by this news. I will continue to wear my boots and remember his kind and sweet personality when I do. I am proud of Matthew for serving his country and will always be connected with him through our service…and the good times we had in class. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

My deepest sympathies to the entire family. I may never have met Matthew or worked with him but as a fellow Soldier and Radiologic Tech it is always difficult to hear of someone so successful and loved to leave this world too soon. Our career is a small family in the Army and no doubt he will be remembered by many who knew him and cherished the time they were able to spend with him. God bless you Matthew and to his entire family may god bless you and assist you during this difficult time.

To Matt’s Family,
In the Late 90’s, I was stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. One of my extra duties there was setting up and supervising the training Soldiers in the National Capital Area (Wash DC) for the Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB) testing twice a year. One of soldiers who volunteered to help with this was Matt. This was the first time I met this firecracker young Specialist. I was like, who is this young troop. I was impressed to have someone of his rank who had been awarded the EFMB, it is not very common. Matt was a very confident and competent soldier. His energy and enthusiasm was a delight. He always made me smile. Our first year together we had 17 out of 22 candidates awarded their EFMB at Fort Indian Gap Pennsylvania. This is unheard of to have that many make it through testing. Matt was a key member in their success. Having a Medical MOS (Job), it is a VERY big honor to be awarded this qualification badge. It is very, very difficult to achieve, many try but not many succeed. Matt worked with me at every EFMB train-up’s until he decided to go to X-ray School. I shortly retired after that. I was lucky to run into him again when he got stationed here at Ft. Lewis. It was a very proud moment to see him attain the rank of a Senior NCO. Matt is one hell of a soldier, Radiologic Technologist, NCO, and a person. I remember Matt telling me his story once he returned back here to Washington from Iraq as if it was yesterday. I remember him coming to visit me and he showing up with that huge Mohawk; again he can always make me smile. I remember and always remember Lisa and Matt in my office informing me of his condition. Lisa, I see where Matt gets his strength. Both of you want me to be a better person for knowing you. I feel a piece of the Cunningham’s will always be a part of the Acosta Family. I feel blessed and Thankful for you allowing my wife and me to share this time with you.
To Matt,
It has been an Honor to serve with someone of your caliber. Your family will be fine as I know you will be. You will never be forgotten. I will see you again.

Dear Matt, this is your MAC classmate from Taiwan. We took the group class together. I knew about your news through the powerful Facebook. I remember you told me once about how much you love to shoot guns, and you know many difficult words that most people don’t know. You are a very kind person. I am very happy to know you. You will be remembered.

I didn’t have the honor of meeting Mathew. I do however know his father, Tommy, very well. Tommy always spoke highly of his son. More than as a father of a son, as one man speaks of another. The man Tommy spoke of a was special man, a soldier, a hero. May his family and friends find peace.

Tommy Kim and family, I knew Matt through you yet felt like I knew him personally. Your stories of his adventures brought him to life in a way only someone who loved him could. Matt is now flying free somewhere with those who went ahead. Love you guys. Lynn
