Obituary of Sandra L. Cleland

Sandra L. Cleland Sandra L. “Sandy” Cleland, age 70, of Tumwater, WA passed away on March 25, 2013. Sandy was born in Olympia, WA and graduated from Olympia High School in 1960 as Sandra L. Wick. She worked as a legal secretary for the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and an administrative assistant at Clallam County until her multiple sclerosis symptoms became too great and she retired in the 1970s. Sandy was incredibly smart; she could type more than 130 wpm with no mistakes, and could spell just about any word you gave to her. She battled MS valiantly for more than 30 years. Sandy was a kind and gracious woman who never said a mean word about anyone. She lived with MS with quiet determination and a cheerful spirit. She loved to read and would consume almost one book a day, most recently listening to her books on CD. Sandy had amazing caregivers over the years who enabled her to stay in her home until just three months ago, and her family is grateful for the loving care they provided. A mocha was her favorite treat, the larger the better. Her cat, Buddy, was a wonderful companion while she was in her home, and even after moving to the nursing home, the nursing home cat frequently found a cozy spot to cuddle up on her bed. Sandy especially enjoyed her time in Port Angeles, WA from 1978 to 1992 while her husband served as the Chief of Police. They loved the Port Angeles community, made such great friends while living there, and treasured the memories they created during that special time. Sandy’s husband, Michael A. Cleland, passed away just three months ago, and they would have been married 35 years on April 15, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her son, Scott A. Brigham, and daughter, Michelle Diane “Shelley” Brigham. She is survived by her brother, Bob Wick (Tera); daughters, Sherri Hoddle (Bryan) and Heather Beaver (Dennis); son, Jeff Cleland (Michelle); sis, Patty Gillenwater; and eight grandchildren. At Sandy’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
