Helen Butcher

Obituary of Helen O. Butcher

Helen was born in Victor, Montana, to Henry and Mary Winings. She came to McCleary, Washington, when she was 10 years old. She graduated from Elma High School in 1949. She was a grocery checker for more than 40 years. She worked at Safeway, Southgate Market, Peterson’s Food Town, Tanglewilde Shop Rite, and retired from Fred Meyers. She was recognized several times for being an outstanding checker and even taught checker training at OVTI (now SPSCC). She really liked people, which is why she was such a good checker. Helen always had a special place in her heart for children and animals. She was a long time member of Greater Olympia Dixieland Jazz Society and loved to dance. She was married to her husband, Robert, for 64 years. She is survived by her sons, Bobby (Marcia), and Aaron (Tim); and her daughter, Mitzi (Tim) Rodriguez; grandchildren, Mike (Melissa) Matheny, Brandon (Alex) Pursey, and Caleb Butcher; and great-grandchildren, Bryan, Gauge and Arianna Pursey. She is also survived by her sister, Sharon Fielder, and was preceded in death by her brother, George, and sisters, Phyllis and Sylvia. ln lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Olympia Union Gospel Mission at 309 Washington Street NE, Olympia, WA 98501 or at OUGM.org.
