Dwight McCoy

Obituary of Dwight H. McCoy

Dwight H. McCoy passed away January 27, 2024, in Olympia, Washington.  He was born August 25, 1949, to Will H. and Jenny M. McCoy in Jackson, Mississippi. He was the oldest of five children. Over his lifetime, he resided in Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Tumwater and Lacey, Washington.

Dwight was raised in a family that had a strong belief in God, a foundation of respect for everyone, and knowledge of the importance of education.  He graduated from Lanier High School in Jackson and the University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff. He married Shirley on August 1, 1971, in Pine Bluff and they had two children. Professionally, Dwight worked for the Milwaukee Public Schools, Miller Brewing Company, Pabst Brewing Company, and Olympia Brewing Company.

Dwight was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and lived their code of manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift.  He was a man of action with a hard-working spirit. He was known for his willingness to spark up conversations with anyone and loved to make people laugh. If you had a secret and he knew it, he made sure others knew it as well.  He loved a good debate but those who engaged him could never expect to win.  His opinions were always known.

Playing golf and hanging with family, friends, and fraternity brothers gave Dwight his greatest pleasure.  He also enjoyed reading, tennis, and roller skating. While he loved old-school rhythm and blues, he had an eclectic taste in music. His favorite group was The Temptations.

Dwight will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of golf and music, and his fervor for life and all its opportunities. His life will reverberate in the lives of those he leaves behind.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley McCoy; daughter, Shannon McCoy; brothers, Charles McCoy and Wilbert McCoy; and sisters, Catherine Harris and Karen McCoy Tartt. He was predeceased by his parents and son, Dwight H. McCoy Jr., who died September 11, 2011.

Services were held at New Life Baptist Church in Lacey.  Memorial donations may be made to the church at 7838 Pacific Ave. SE, Lacey, WA 98503.
