Obituary of Jerry Emery Hayden

Jerry Emery Hayden, 89, of Shelton, Washington, passed away peacefully at Mason General Hospital on January 26, 2024.  He was born in Aberdeen, Washington, on March 17, 1934, to Emery Frank Hayden and Lila Hayden.

Jerry married Margie Edith “Edie” Hayden on September 18, 1971, in Winston Oregon.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Edie; and several children by marriage and by a previous marriage, including Kay Mead of Roseburg, Oregon, Leroy (Deana) Mead of Roseburg, Peggy (Jeff) Johnson of Shelton, Kay Ellen Couch of Goldendale, Washington, Lorraine Hayden Greenlee of Goldendale; many grandchildren; and younger brother, Michael Hayden of Port Ludlow, Washington.  He was predeceased by his parents, and daughter, Heidi Sue Petty (died April 15, 2013).

Jerry enjoyed his life backpacking with his horses and mules, taking many camping trips in Skykomish, and caring for his many beloved dogs and cats on their farm in Shelton. He said they kept him going, along with the love he had for his wife and family. He especially enjoyed his time with family, shooting his guns, target practicing, and sitting around the campfire with a good whisky, sharing stories from the past. He loved to joke around just to “get ya going.” He was loved my many friends and family, even though he was as stubborn as the mules he rode.

Jerry was lovingly known as “Pampos” by his family.  The name was given to him by his grandson, Jerry Michael, who spent many hours with him while living in Appleton, Washington, east of the mountains.  They enjoyed logging, hunting, and running the back woods together.

Jerry’s major career in life was being a logger, felling large, old growth timber.  The tallest he ever felled was a 17.5-foot cedar on the butte. He really had to work on that one.  It’s a good thing he was as strong as the trees he felled.  In his later years, he worked for Walmart in Shelton, along with his wife; they made many friends while working there.

A memorial to honor Jerry will take place on April 13, 2024, 1:00 p.m. at Spring Road Chapel, 1113 E. Shelton Spring Road, Shelton, WA 98585.  Everyone is invited to come share stories and remember this wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
