Obituary of Larry Lee Shumate

Larry Lee Shumate passed on to his heavenly home on December 4, 2023, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington, where he was being treated for pneumonia.  He was born February 11, 1953, to William Russel Shumate and Lila Vee (Weaver) Shumate in Olympia. For the past 10 years, he resided at Woodland Assisted Living.

During Larry’s early years, he had many reconstructive surgeries due to Cerebral Palsy.  He never let his disabilities get in the way of living a full life.  He graduated from Olympia High School in 1972 and attended one year at Centralia Community College. Professionally, he worked for the Washington State Department of Licensing, retiring after 32 years.  Larry was organized, liked to plan ahead, and paid his own way through life.

As a young person, Larry belonged to Future Farmers of America (FFA) and enjoyed working in his vegetable garden.  He loved people, Bible study, and church fellowship.  He was a member of Emmanuel Bible Fellowship for 50 years; church was the most important thing in his life.

Larry enjoyed watching Westerns (especially Bonanza and Gunsmoke), college football (avid Husky fan), and family sitcoms. He listened to music by Dean Martin and traditional country-western singers.

Larry is survived by his brother, Loren W. Shumate of Olympia; sisters, Linda D. (Shumate) Rounsley (Larry) of Olympia, and Leisa A. (Shumate) Hill (David) of Portland, Oregon; nephews, Timothy Flumerfelt, Nathanael Hill (Rachel), and Josiah Hill (Sarah); grandnephew, Silas Hill; nieces, Farren Lippl (Chris) and Tierney Butler.  He is predeceased by his parents; and grandparents, Lawrence and Violet Weaver, and Charles and Jessie Shumate.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, January 7, 2024, 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Bible Fellowship, 2508 State Ave. NE, Olympia, WA 98506.

Memorial donations may be made to the March of Dimes or Seattle Children’s Hospital.
