Obituary of Joan Ardell Evans

Joan Ardell Evans passed away of Alzheimer’s Disease at home on November 5, 2023, in Olympia, Washington

Joan was born November 13, 1932, to Edwin Franklin McLellan and Omie Robertson in a shack near the ocean in Moclips, Washington. She went to school in Moclips and later the family moved to Olympia, where she graduated from Olympia High School.

After graduation, Joan was hired as a bookkeeper at the United Dairy where she met Edgar Evans, a milkman.  They were married on August 23, 1952, in Olympia, and raised three children.

Joan worked for a brief time as a state employee and later got a job at a travel agency.  Later, Joan and a friend started their own agency, Allways Travel Service, from which she retired.  Over the years, her love of travel took her to such places as Hawaii, Japan, Australia, and London. She visited almost every continent and many countries.

Joan was a kind, generous, friendly, humble, empathetic, compassionate, and thoughtful woman of God.  She was a member of the Tumwater United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. She also was a loving mother and friend who will be remembered for her positive outlook and wonderful hugs.

She loved to collect things like Hallmark ornaments.  She also liked to sew, knit and crochet; she made many blankets for baby showers.  She really enjoyed watching Westerns; Bonanza and Gunsmoke were her favorites. She liked to play card games, especially solitaire, and loved to go to garage sales, too.  Joan was an avid Mariners and Seahawks fan.  She was a fantastic cook and loved cooking for family and friends.  She loved the holidays, especially Christmas; one year she set up seven Christmas trees in the house.

Joan will be missed and never forgotten.

She is survived by her son, Lowell Dean Evans; daughter, Sheri Dawn MacKenzie; five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Edgar Sampson Evans Sr.; son, Edgar Sampson Evans Jr.;  brother, Edwin Lowell McLellan; and sister, Barbara L. Vaughn.

Services will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Tumwater United Methodist Church, 1401 Lake Park Dr. SW, Tumwater, WA 98512.
