David Bates

Obituary of David Harold Bates

David died September 28, 2023, at home in Olympia, Washington, with his wife, Roberta; daughter, Luise; and granddaughter, Rachael, by his side.

He was born April 18, 1930, in Lebanon, Oregon, to Harold and Irma Bates.  He graduated from Commerce High School, then entered the working world. Eventually, he trained in engineering/design and was a designer by trade throughout his career at Skagit Steel/Iron Works and Christensen Engineering.  He loved to draw in his free time as well and shared his talent with friends and family. He also created models and amazing leather animals.

They recently moved to Olympia, but spent most of their married lives in Sedro Woolley, Washington, where they were members of the First Baptist Church.  David enjoyed the worship time and was part of the choir.  He also did artwork for special programs.

David, along with Roberta, enjoyed traveling and camping in their trailer.  Over the years, they traveled through all but two states.  They flew to Hawaii for their 25th anniversary and even drove to Alaska.

David is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Roberta Bates; they adored each other. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Debra Vanderpool (Rockie), Terry Bates (Leslie-deceased), Davene Tunininga (Rick), and Luise Frank; along with 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren scattered around the country. What a great group! The only bad part is that David and Roberta just couldn’t see them enough since they were so far away.

David was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters and their husbands, Joy Ann Jensen (Harlan) and Betty Jean Freilinger (Lester).

At Roberta’s request, there will be no funeral service.  You can express condolences to her at:  825 Lilly Road NE Apt 218, Olympia, WA  98506-6940.
