Obituary of Shannon Margaret Campbell Rice

Shannon Margaret Campbell Rice slipped away from us in her sleep in the early hours of the morning on December 13, 2022.  She, husband Jason and their children were on the island of Maui to celebrate Shannon and Jason’s tenth wedding anniversary.

Shannon was born in Toppenish, Washington, to Bill and Margaret Campbell on February 18, 1978.  She grew up near Zillah, graduating from Zillah High School in 1996.  Many of Shannon’s younger years were spent in her Grandpa and Grandma Sandlin’s orchards, helping with harvest, and learning how to be a farm girl. But most of her fun came from after-work swim parties with her brother, cousins, and friends in their pool.  She had many fond memories of backyard barbeques and pool parties at grandma’s house.

After graduating from high school, Shannon worked at Dunbar Jewelers, then traveled to Olympia and worked for Harbor Wholesale Grocery. While employed there, she met and fell in love with Jason Rice and, after a tumultuous love affair, they were married.

Shannon and Jason have two children, daughter Hunter and son Wyatt.  Shannon was passionate about her children, and those who knew her, knew she was truly one of the original Mama Bears.  Everyone knew never to get between Shannon and her cubs.

She loved spending time outdoors with her family.  Camping, hunting, fishing, and time on the water in their new boat were things she looked forward to.  Soccer games and basketball games filled her weekends.

Shannon loved her whole family fiercely, especially her brother Andy.  Although they lived on opposite ends of the magnet, she would go to the wall for him.  She valued his opinion on many matters and listened closely to his advice (though she didn’t always follow it).  She was a great cook, and the entire family looked forward to her Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas dinners, even if they had to clean up the pots and pans.

Shannon had recently taken a personal leap of faith and started a new job with Chartwell Compliance, after having worked for the State of Washington for 18 years.  She was excited about entering the private sector and loved her new employers and the challenges at this job.  She couldn’t keep from talking about how she felt herself growing intellectually and spiritually in her new work environment, and what she felt the future held for her and her family.

Shannon is survived by her husband, Jason Rice; daughter, Hunter (12); son, Wyatt Rice (8); parents, Bill and Margaret Campbell; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Megan Campbell, and their two daughters, Ava and Grace; her mother and father-in-law, Patty and Don Rice; brother-in-law, Greg Rice, and his son and daughter, Carson and Calyn; numerous beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of life is planned for January 21, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 600 Overhulse Rd. NW, Olympia, WA 98502.
