Mr. VandeWege was my fifth grade teacher in Odessa in 1965 and I remember him very fondly. His love of teaching was both obvious and infectious. We actually performed a "Weekly Reader" version of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth,' and he invited our entire class of high-energy nine-year-olds to his wedding! May he Rest In Peace... Great guy...

My sisters Teresa, Patty, and I send our condolences to John's family. My younger sister Patty was in Mr. Vandewege's fifth grade class and had a memorable year. She particularly remembers the spectacular Halloween parties he put on for his class. She came home one day from school and said he'd asked the class if they had any older siblings who would like to babysit his boys. My sister Teresa and I volunteered which started the Dorian Sisters being the primary babysitters to David and Stephen when he and Mitzi wanted to go out. Once Patty was old enough, she babysat their boys, too. Both Mitzi and John were very personable and kind. They also paid double the going rate for babysitters at the time we watched their boys. Believe it or not, most parents 45 years ago paid 50 cents an hour and getting $1.00 an hour was something to brag about. I became a teacher too, and talked to John at North Thurston School District events. One time John commented that a long-haired hippy guy named Pat who did electrical work at Mountain View Elementary (where John worked at the time,) sang some of his original songs at a school assembly. I laughed and told John that I married that long-haired hippy!
As the family and friends grieve, we hope the many happy memories of John will bring comfort.
