Obituary of Sonya Firkins

Our beloved Sonya Firkins passed away from complications of Alzheimer's on June 14, 2022, at her home in Lacey, Washington, where she resided for 43 years. She was born to Harry Schwalbe and Dorothy (McMillan) Percival on May 8, 1940, in Olympia, Washington.

Sonya got her first job at age 18 as a Van De Camp girl at the former Ralph’s Thriftway in downtown Olympia. From this position, she was able to transfer to a retail clerk position, and subsequently to a position in the meat department. She worked for Ralph’s Thriftway, Lacey Mark-It Foods, Food Pavilion, Mega Foods, Safeway, and lastly Albertsons for over 40 years. She retired from Albertsons in 2002. Many will remember her for her happy disposition and ready smile.

Sonya married James “Jim” Firkins Jr. and lived a very loving life. She retired at age 62 to allow more time to travel with her husband. She and Jim made eight independent trips to Europe, over 25 cruises, multiple visits to their beloved Hawaii, and more.

Sonya was a sweet and loving woman, hardworking, and wonderful. She will be missed by so many who had the opportunity to meet her.

Sonya is survived by her husband Jim Firkins; sons, Brandon Firkins and James Firkins III of Olympia Washington; sister, Jerri Metcalf of Sacramento, California; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, William Schwalbe and Robert Schwalbe; and sister, Carol Wilsie
