Sometimes friends made later in life become your best friends. That was the case with Melissa and me. While I’ve known her for 30 years, it wasn’t until I retired and moved to Sedona Arizona that we became really good friends. She came at least once a year to be in the beautiful red rocks and to have adventures with me both in Sedona and other places. We traveled well together. The most important trip with her was the one we took to Washington DC in 2008. While I only spent two years in the Air Force, Missy was a retired lieutenant colonel. She had not been in DC for a few years, so we played tourists. The most significant stop for me was the 911 Memorial at the Pentagon. The most significant place for her was the Vietnam Wall. Of course it was! She served as an Air Force nurse there and was honored with the Bronze Star during her tour of duty. As we approached the Wall, there was a separate bronze memorial honoring the nurses who served in Vietnam. When we realized what the memorial was for, Missy sat down on the pedestal and cried. She did not know the memorial existed and she was flooded with memories of her service there. We stayed for a very long time while she began to reminisce about her time in Vietnam. Being in helicopters that picked up the wounded. Flying in planes with them to Germany or to the U.S. depending on the severity of their injuries. All the while providing critical services to soldiers no matter what else was going on around her. Then we went to the Wall and she found the names she was looking for, both of us emotional and teary. Late into the evening, she shared stories of her time in the Air Force and of her stellar career there. I was overcome as only someone can be who hears firsthand the horrors of war. Our friendship continued throughout her life. I knew her heart, her courage, her kindness, her generosity, her loyalty, her loving soul. She was a wonderful friend and I miss her. I understand why God took her and she will be an angel watching over those of us left behind who loved her. Shirley Smith

The Bible in the Book of Hebrews (13:2) says, "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for in so doing some have entertained angels." Far from being a stranger herself, Missy was as close to being an angel as it gets. Her Godly character was always aimed at making good out of something bad, better out of something good, and best out of everything she could -- always giving God the credit, for she knew it was from Him that her help came from.
Body strength may have faded, but spiritual peace flooded her soul to overflowing. Those blessed by it were blessed to see the hand of God. And now, today and forever, Missy's faith and belief in Jesus her Savior has her walking among angels!
Here on Earth her memory will be cherished. On this side of Heaven she will be missed, but only for what God in His timeframe calls "a little while." The other side of Heaven is "forever in His home." Missy is truly home now, and I am thankful for having had the opportunity of knowing someone like Missy whose life was a glimpse of what that home is like.

On behalf of the Society of Air Force Nurses, please know we are mourning with you the death of our friend and colleague, retired Lieutenant Colonel Melissa Jackson. She was a remarkable woman who made a difference in the lives of so many in her own journey though life. As a longtime member of the Society, a donation will be made in her honor and memory as suggested. Melissa will be missed by many, and she will not be forgotten by the community of Air Force nurses.

Missy was one of a kind and her loving heart will truly be missed! I have wonderful memories of my time spent with Missy! Visiting her when she was stationed in Las Vegas and her taking me to California to visit Hollywood. We had so much fun, lots of laughter! Then many years later her coming here and staying with us in PA. We went hiking up Hawk Mountain and visiting the campus of the college our daughter was attending. She wanted to see it all so our daughter gave her a tour. That’s what made her so special, she was truly interested in others. Missy, we will miss you and your kind heart! May your spirit be free! Love, Michael, Anne, and Melissa❤️
