I met Pete over 40 years ago when he hired me to work for the WFCA. He had just fired the person I was replacing and I was young and inexperienced. My first impression of Pete was that he was nice enough, but also pretty darned intimidating—he wasn’t gonna take any guff from anybody! It didn’t take long for me to find out, though, that Pete also had a heart of gold and he would do anything for those he cared about.
Pete set high standards in the workplace—he expected excellence from himself and staff—and in the 1980s with Sandy on board, the three of us made quite a team working with a small budget to deliver services to our member fire districts. Shortly before he died, he told me how proud he was of our team. So was I.
I have so many wonderful memories of Pete...the road trips we went on, his love of cars (he had so many), his cowboy stories, the great advice he gave me about so many things. Pete was the guy who always showed up five minutes early, jumped up to help someone who had fallen down, and he could solve problems in an outside-the-box manner before “outside-the-box” was a thing.
On particularly busy work days, as he was leaving the office Pete would stop at the door, turn to look at me and say, “Thanks for all your hard work today.” The first time he said it I was surprised—who does that, I thought...I’m just doing my job. But it made me feel good...appreciated. I knew it was heartfelt and genuine because it was coming from Pete.
During my last visit with Pete, he said, “I have lived a good life.” Indeed he did. Rest In Peace, Petey.
Love,
No-rah

Was he a friend of mine? The word "friend" does not rise high enough in my relation to Pete. We met over 63 years ago and have been lucky to say we liked the same things, laughed at the same jokes and loved to be in each other's company. I was his best man in his marriage to Judy and he was my best man in my marriage to Beverly. We covered the San Juan Islands in our boating years. One thing we didn't both like, seafood. I remember the time in the '60s we got together about 4 couples at Samish Is. I had spent a lot of money to make a dish called Ciappino per a recipe of Joe Dimaggios's mother. It had crab, clams, oysters and salmon in a stew with 1/2 gallon of Italian Swiss Colony diego red. It was great and Pete thanked me for making him a hamburger in substitution for the seafood stew. Imagine that he preferred a hamburger. Yes we laughed together. One of his favorite tricks he liked to play on me was to wake me up with a phone call at 3:00 in the morning and would say "I don't want you to worry, I am safe at home, good night." He would laugh and hang up. But we also shared a laugh at many naughty jokes, not filthy jokes but just those that summed up the ironies of life in a humorous vane. We both loved our dogs. In our last phone call, he said the same thing to me again "Don't worry about me, I've had ups and downs, more ups than downs. I love you Boy." But this time he meant it. The Best Man and I continued our love for each other through our entire lives and now for Eternity. If there is an after life, my journey would be eased knowing Pete would be there to greet me.
Brother Dave Richdale.

So sad Pete's gone. We were brothers in Sigma Chi at the U of W. As I recall he had been in the military in the Korean War before coming to the U of W. He had a couple poignant stories from his time in Korea. We weren't close friends, but I always enjoyed chatting with him. I had lost contact with him until about 7 years ago, when I started attending the annual picnic at brother Dave Richdale's place. We had some enjoyable conversations at those picnics. He was the same old Pete. Ken Saunders, Class of 1958.
