Obituary of John H. Sather

On September 24, 2020, John H. “Jack” Sather, loving husband and father, passed away in Lacey, Washington, after battling cancer for the last two years.

Jack was born September 1, 1942, to Oscar and Edna (Schumacher) Sather in Portland, Oregon.

Jack graduated from Federal Way High School, Federal Way, Washington, in 1960, where he excelled in all sports.  He was offered a football scholarship to play for University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he graduated with a BA in Business in 1964.  After graduation, Jack signed up for the Army Reserve and spent basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  In 1965, he wed Georgene Gewalt and they spent years together.

Jack’s sales career was as a manufacturer’s representative for a number of local companies.

In 1993, Jack married Marcia Stearns in Leavenworth, Washington.  They enjoyed their years together camping with a tent trailer, shoveling snow in Northern Idaho, cruising Europe, volkswalking, ferry rides, weeks in Mexico, playing tennis and pickleball, spending winters in Arizona and summers here in the Pacific Northwest where Jack loved the salt water.  Jack also enjoyed senior softball after retirement.  Jack had a hankering for anything adventuresome.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia of Lacey, Washington; his brother, Gary Sather of Auburn, Washington; his daughters, Amy Flanigan and Megan Patzer; as well as his seven grandchildren.

Jack’s personality radiated warmth and encouraged your trust.  He loved his family and was always involved in his daughters’ swimming competitions, as well as the sports of his grandchildren.  His smile was always a welcoming light and he loved his “dad” jokes.  He opened his heart, welcomed everyone, and valued good friends.  Jack was always faithful in his prayer life and his Christian walk so we can be assured he’s in the best hands now.

A celebration of life will be held sometime in the post-pandemic future when friends and family can freely come together. Donations in his name may be made to the Panorama Benevolent Fund, 1751 Circle Lane SE, Lacey, WA 98503, or online by clicking HERE.
