Aunty Jo seemed to me to be the epitome of trans-Atlantic travel chic when she used to visit us in the '70s and early '80s. I remember her red and white TWA travel tags on her luggage and the white sneakers she wore. She always packed so much in to her visits and seemed to have such energy and interest in her family in the UK. Of all the Griffiths sisters I knew best: Evelyn (my grand mother), Meg, Gwen and JoAnne, JoAnne always seemed to me the busiest and to lead the biggest life. She showed a real interest in Melissa and me when she was staying with us and had an ability to connect with us and not talk down to us, avoiding most of those predictable old people questions about school and friends.
When Melissa and I went to the US for Susan and David's wedding, chaperoned around America by Les and Eve, I saw such a different side to her life; the matriarch to a large and far flung family that all seemed, to some extent, to depend on her. Moving her life to Washington from New Jersey was a huge undertaking, but subsequent letters, phone calls and later, emails, when the visits became too much, all showed us back in the UK how important JoAnne was to so many people, and not just her family, who always came first. She always remembered to send birthday cards, even to our own children who she hadn't met! I think her long, full and busy life should be an inspiration to us all.

Robert and I always had fond memories of our short stay with JoAnne in Lacey. She looked after us with great kindness and made sure we were introduced to more of the local family members and taken round the local sights. We tried to repay her hospitality when she came on a flying visit to Dorset She was a very kind lady and I am sure she will be greatly missed by the family. I always had to finish off our emails to JoAnne/Susan with the words Love and Best Wishes to all the Family and I am doing it again now.

Aunty Jo's visits to England made a strong impression on me when I was growing up. She would talk to me in a way that made me feel she was interested in me as a person, not just a child. She certainly did show huge love and interest in the family: on one of her later visits, she kept me entertained during a long walk with her encyclopedic knowledge of our vast extended family, including the ages of each grandchild and each great niece and nephew!
Once I was lucky enough to see Aunty Jo in her home in Lacey: she couldn't have given me a warmer welcome, but I was also struck to discover how active she was in the local community, doing a lot to support older and less fortunate people.
Naturally, she will be very much missed: but leaves behind so many rich memories and lessons for a long life, well lived.
With great fondness
Malcolm Griffiths (Nephew, Graham's brother)

We have very fond memories of Jo-Anne. Although separated by an ocean it was always a delight to catch up with her news. Jo-Anne's love for her family and pride and joy in their achievements always shone through. We know she will be much missed but what wonderful memories you have to share of a very special lady. Sending love to all of her family, Graham (nephew), Elizabeth and family

Susan & I were close friends in high school & college. One of the bonuses of being Susan’s friend, was that I came to know Mr & Mrs K. What a delight! They always genuinely welcomed me. They made me feel beautiful and smart and loved. I had my own special family, but it was nice to be warmly accepted by these wonderful people. I was loud, outgoing, active, high spirited,….….the total opposite of their thoughtful, introverted, only daughter. I was always aware & a little surprised, that they approved of & actually encouraged, our friendship. It made me fell worthy that I was entrusted with their beloved Susan. As a mom, I have strived to treat all of my kids’ friends as I was treated by the Keavenys…..and sometimes it isn’t easy.
I need to add to the list of Mrs. Keaveny-isms. I like a tidy home, but it is a constant challenge for me. I often hear Mrs. K’s voice in the back of my head, “A place for everything and everything in its place”. She had a saying for everything!
When my husband heard of her passing he said, " That was a force of good leaving the world.” He’s absolutely right. Our sincere condolences to her entire family.
