Obituary of Matthew Berschauer

Matthew Berschauer, age 35, grew his Angel Wings on Monday June 29, 2020.  Born with Down Syndrome, he blessed everyone he touched with his immense joy, laughter and smile.  He is formerly of Tenino, Washington.  Matthew attended Tumwater schools until transferring to Tenino High School for his last two years, graduating from THS.  As a result of Matthew’s endless love for football, and his charismatic nature, he was invited to partake in the Tumwater football team’s many events.  Matthew was a proud member of the Tenino Lions Club and was a huge Seahawks fan.  He slept in, decorated the walls with, and wore Seahawks gear all year long.  He never missed a Seahawks game.

Matthew was a Special Olympics athlete, taking his role very seriously.  He was a powerlifter for the Tumwater Valley Power Dragons, in addition to competing in baseball and basketball.  He loved his coaches and always wanted to be “Coach Matthew.”  He looked forward every year to state competition at Fort Lewis.  He also participated in sports and events sponsored by Thurston County Parks and Recreation.  He always looked forward to Wednesday bowling with his friends, along with their monthly dances.

Matthew loved to dance, he loved parties, and especially loved weddings.  Due to his large close family, he never left the dance floor until he danced with everyone. He was always front and center to catch a bride’s garter, and was very proud of the four he had caught over the years.

Throughout Matthew’s entire life, he enjoyed two major hobbies, baking and crafting.  His family knew him as a master baker and crafter.  He blessed them and the community with the fruits of his hobbies.

Matthew had a special connection with his two younger brothers, Mason and Mitchell.  He enjoyed all the time he got to spend with them, and later as they grew, he entrusted them with his protection, and especially enjoyed the attention he received from the friends they brought home.

He is survived by his parents, Correen Henriksen (Doug) and Mark Berschauer; brothers, Mason Berschauer and Mitchell (Mary Lillian) Berschauer; and sisters, Lexi Berschauer and Hanna Berschauer; grandparents, Myron and Colleen Kirchmeier; and Godparents Ray and Pam Berschauer. Matthew also leaves behind his many uncles, aunts, cousins, and members of community that made him feel loved.   Matthew is preceded in death by grandparents, Jake and Marion Berschauer.

If you wish to make donations in Matthew’s name, please make them to the Thurston County Special Olympics where they will be greatly appreciated. Make checks out to Special Olympics Washington. Please write Matthew Berschauer in the memo portion of the check, and mail to Mark Barker, 2409 44th Ave. NW, Olympia WA 98502.
