Grandma really was the best there is. Grandma was the best simply because she was always there, and aside from any anecdote I could think of, that's really what's most important. Every holiday, every major event, every baseball game and every birthday. She would wake me up and push me out the door in the morning to get to school on time. She would drive me to wherever I needed to go. She watched me unwrap over 500 Christmas presents. I don't remember any grand gestures, just her constant love, attention, and occasional quip. Her presence throughout my life was all anyone could ask for in a grandparent. I was lucky to have her to sneak me popsicles and PG-13 movies when I was a kid, her friendship as I grew up, and steadfast spirit as I became an adult. Love you grandma.

Grandma, you were always there for me and always excited for my accomplishments. You cheered me on at graduations, you were excited for the birth of my children, you gave me wisdom at my wedding. You were there to hold my hand during times of struggle. You were the rock I needed. Thank you for everything. I miss and love you. You were my best friend.

Peggy Pontious---my aunt and my mother’s sister---always called me her favorite niece. Of course, I was her only niece, so we always had a good time making that clear during each of our conversations. Peg was a source of joy to me my entire life, and I admired her loving, giving, creative and courageous spirit throughout all the years I was privileged to know her. She opened her heart and her house and her knowledge to family and friends wherever she lived, worked, or traveled. My parents, brother Tom, and I had many wonderful vacations with Peg and Ray and my cousins, Sue and Teri---whom I adored and had so very many good times with.
I have two favorite personal stories about my Aunt Peggy that will live in my heart and soul forever.
In l978, when I was working as a Music Therapist in Stockton, CA, I wound up co-directing a musical for adults with developmental disabilities. The other co-director and I were invited to perform our show at a Festival in Disneyland. So Joe (who had written the musical and whom I later married) and I drove all ten students from Stockton to southern California. Joe, and I were so excited about this honor but neglected to think things through and realize we had no place to stay overnight with our cast. When I was talking to my aunt about all this on the phone, she said, “Bring everyone over to our house! You can stay here!” So my gracious Aunt Peggy and Uncle Ray opened up their home to Joe and I and our beloved cast members. Although they had very little exposure to individuals with special needs, Peg and Ray were so gracious, hospitable, and fun. The students loved them, and we all had a fabulous time. We brought dessert to the house that night which we all shared along with stories and lots of laughter. The next morning Ray made his specialty pancakes for all of us before we drove off to Disneyland and the show. When my brother, Tom, and I visited Peg in Olympia just two years ago, Peg told me that night with our very special students was one of her favorite memories. And it certainly is one of mine.
Another gift that my Aunt Peggy gave to me happened in 1975 when I was living in southern California and working as Music Therapist at Fairview State Hospital. I used to visit Peg and Ray about every other weekend, because I was so lonely. Again, they opened their home to me, and we got quite close. I was struggling with life issues at the time and not taking the best care of myself. So my wonderful Aunt created for her only niece a cookbook entitled “You Gotta Put Fuel in the Tank To Get the Flivver Down the Road.” (Something her clever dad, Tobey, would have said.) Peg’s cookbook for me was based on Peg Bracken’s I Hate To Cook book and was filled with very simple, healthy recipes designed to motivate me and help me out. Never will I forget the time and creativity it took for my aunt to put together that cookbook. And it did help keep me going: my fliver did get down the road…and I felt loved and cared about at a time I really needed it.
You will never be forgotten, Peggy Pontious. I will always love you. Thank you for being the amazing, strong, courageous woman you were, and for giving so much to so many.
