I thought of Robert today for the first time in ages and since we'd long lost touch I just searched for his name to discover his recent passing. We attended the Overlake School together and crossed paths socially in the decades that followed. We hadn't laid eyes on each other in 20 years, but I still considered him a great friend. I'm struck by several very powerful memories of his razor sharp sense of humor, his perceptive thinking, and his welcoming spirit. My deepest condolences to his wife Sherry and his family.

I met Robert at work over fourteen years ago and we became fast friends. He took his work seriously, did good work and was a good mentor, all with that glorious sense of humor lurking at every turn. Robert was a good man, a person of integrity, his light shining most brightly in his friendships. If Robert considered you his friend you knew it - if it has been awhile you would likely receive a hug and a back slap just as you would upon departure if he thought it could be awhile longer before seeing you again.. A good listener he remembered details of your life, was looking to gift and do nice things for you and genuinely cared and loved. The power of Robert's friendship the most stunning statement of his life for me which I will always both cherish and miss. Goodbye for now my friend.

Robert was one of my Dad’s best friends. Every time they did something together like fishing or snorkeling in Mexico, I always heard about how much fun they had and how cool of a guy he was. I only met him a couple of times, but the last memory I have was visiting his house on Herron Island. He welcomed us at the dock and gave us a tour. I remember how funny, friendly, and happy he was during that visit. And when I talked to him, he only asked me questions about myself and what I was thinking about studying in college. This stuck out to me because of how selfless and genuinely interested he was in what I had to say, he also gave me some great life advice. Robert was one of the friendliest guys and was always smiling, he will be missed.

Robert and I crossed paths for a few years in college and he left an indelible mark on me. I'd consider him a mentor for me during those years. His personality was absolutely the largest in the room or space that he occupied. Everything was done with a smile and a fantastic sense of humor.
We lost touch for 20+ years, but I was blessed to reconnect twice in the last few years and learn of his life and love of his family. I will miss the chance of future meetings Robert. Rest in peace.

The world has lost a great man! Robert's sense of humor was unparalleled and always refreshing. We loved seeing Robert and Sherry cruising by our house in their little Boston Whaler on their way to (probably) one of Robert's favorite fishing spots in South Puget Sound. We also loved Robert's cooking skills...especially barbecued salmon on the deck! One Mothers' Day we invited Robert and Sherry to join us for lunch on our beach. Robert asked what they could bring. Colleen answered: just bring anything from the fridge that you want to share. In true Robert fashion he brought three things: a battery, an old cigar, and a half rotten cantaloupe! We are sorry we can't attend the service but we will certainly raise a toast to Robert. Sherry, you and Mack and the entire family are in our prayers, Colleen and Steve

We enjoyed spending time with Robert on our deck! Robert could be very animated when telling a story and our Springer once snapped at him because she thought he was being too animated !! I was embarrassed but Robert just laughed!!

One evening we hosted Robert and Sherry on our boat. Along with a bottle of wine, Robert brought along a gift for our boat: a "portable" toilet, made out of a baby toilet seat. Robert had even gone so far as to attach a toilet paper roll holder and even included the paper. We appreciated Robert's humor and good cheer. We love Sherry and look forward to celebrating Robert's life (and adept handyman skills) at the service. With love, Lora & Scott Poepping

Robert & I shared some of the best times out in the wilderness fishing on the rivers, trolling in the bays, and hanging out at his beach house. One of the most exciting times we had was down on Wallipa bay fishing for salmon. We were very excited as the limit was 4 fish each and Robert started getting hits as soon as he had his line in the water. It was not long before Robert had a hog on the line and was working and fighting trying to bring that fish to the surface. I grabbed my net and got into position to hoist it into the boat. About that time the clip on my net which allows me to lock the net loop on the end of the pole broke off. It had corroded to a point where the metal clasp snapped off and now the net would not stay attached to the pole. Quickly I removed the net from the shaft and leaned over the gunwale in an effort to dip the net loop in the water. With out the pole handle to hang onto and with about 3 feet of freeboard below me I was not able to get the net under the fish unless Robert had the fish right on the surface. While I was trying to get under the fish Robert was furiously attempting to guide the salmon over my net. All the while his fishing line kept hanging up on me like a clothes line. During the keystone cops chaos of trying to land that fish the line snapped and ended our efforts. Robert was winded from the physical exertion and adrenaline rushing in to him and was beside his self watching that fish sprint to the depths. We were both dispirited to the point we had to stop fishing for a few minutes and have a beverage and convey to each other our disappointment. We still ended the day with a catch but that first one was the ‘one that got away’.

After admiring a driftwood anchor that was on the back of Sherry and Roberts house I set out to find some driftwood to make one. Spending countless hours searching for the right shapes to make one I told Robert about my plight. The next day delivered to my home was an amazing anchor made from the most perfect pieces of driftwood and old rope. Robert was so many things, but most of all he was a great friend. We will miss him so very much.
