Obituary of Frances Aileen Gronka

Frances Aileen “Frankie” Gronka, known by her family as “Pommie,” passed away November 4, 2019 in Olympia, Washington, her home of 54 years.  She was 95 years old.  Pommie was born September 19, 1924 to Charles W. and Alice Josephine Morgan in Olympia. She also lived in Puyallup, Washington for nine years.

Pommie graduated from Olympia High School.  She married Nick Gronka, Jr. on March 5, 1942 in Sumner, Washington.  In addition to being a homemaker, she worked for Bell Telephone, Washington State Library, and Zittel’s Marina.            

Pommie was an avid reader and read the newspaper daily, always making sure to point out articles of interest.  She also loved to stay in the loop with friends and family via text, Facebook and Instagram, which was cool for someone of her generation.  The marina’s Facebook feed will not have near the support without her likes and comments!  She also loved the Mariners, never missing a game, win or lose.

Pommie is survived by daughter, Kathryn A. Zittel (Michael) of Olympia; grandsons, Nick Zittel (Melanie) of Olympia, and Jason Zittel of Olympia; granddaughters, Alicia Fritts (Jeremy) of Mill Creek, Washington, and Brenda Bartsch (Jonathan) of Olympia; seven great grandchildren, Ava Zittel, Aileen Zittel, Hanna Fritts, Jacob Fritts, Jerek Fritts, Kayla Bartsch and Brett Bartsch.  Pommie was devoted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and will be missed dearly by them.

She was predeceased by her husband, Nick Gronka, Jr. (8-21-75); parents, Charles and Josephine Morgan; sisters, Elizabeth Moultine, Nettie Williams, and Helen Michael; and brothers, John “Jack” Morgan and Charles Ray Morgan; and grandson, Brett E. Zittel.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 11, 2020, 1:00 p.m. at South Sound Manor, 455 North St. SE, Tumwater, WA 98501.
