Obituary of Patricia Callan Hedwall

Patricia Callan Hedwall, 91, passed away of a stroke on November 6, 2019 in Olympia, Washington. She was born July 24, 1928 to Joseph Patrick “Joe” Callan and Verna Holmstrom Callan in Everett, Washington, where she lived until 1950.  She then resided in Seattle (1950s), Bellevue (1961-1986), Camano Island (1986-2002), and Olympia the past 17 years.

Pat graduated from Everett High School in 1946, and the Providence School of Nursing in Everett. She married Don Hedwall in 1955 in Everett.  Professionally, she worked at Providence Hospital in Seattle, Doctor’s Hospital in Seattle, Group Health Clinic in Redmond; and retired in 1986.  She was a member of Eastside Nurses Assoc. in Bellevue, and served as president for several years. She also belonged to St. Michael Catholic Church in Olympia.

Though Pat had no formal art training, she was involved in numerous art projects and was a founding member of the Bellevue Art Museum, the Bellevue Arts Commission and the Pacific Northwest Arts and Crafts Association. She was current a member of the Contemporary QuiltArt Association, Fiberoptix, and several museums.

Pat was a creative spirit who loved to experiment with colors and patterns. In the ‘60s and

‘70s, it was the Batik pen and flowers. In the ‘80s, while repairing a family quilt, she found an outlet for her creativity that would carry her to her last day. She left a subtle impression, but had a big impact on people’s lives. Samples of her work may be viewed HERE.

Pat is survived by her sons, Donald Martin “Marty” Hedwall and Michael Callan “Mike” Hedwall; daughters, Nancy Kathleen Angel and Theresa Anne Finney Hedwall; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Verna Callan; her sisters, Kathleen Anne Stanford and Margaret Jo Berry, and husband, Donald S. Hedwall.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday, November 14, 12:00 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1208 11th Ave. SE, Olympia, WA 98501.
