Some of my fondest childhood memories are of going to Danika's house and being greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Washington. There was always food on the table, and Mr. Washington's cheerful smile welcomed us like we were family. His sense of humor put us young kids at ease, and we felt like we were home. I'll always keep those moments close to heart.

I met the Washington family when I was about 4 years old. Their home was my second home, just across the street. Leon was fun and playful, loving and kind. He was always dancing and joking. He introduced me to new foods. He was encouraging and positive. I don't have a single negative memory of him. Although growing up created distance in my relationship with the family, I know he loved me and I love him too. I am so thankful I got to be part of his life. I am grateful to call him my Second Dad. -Katie Smigaj-

I first met Leon in 1997 when I was a running start student at SPSCC. He was hanging out in the cafeteria talking to the International students, and he just struck up a conversation with me. We both had language partners, and as always, Leon was quick to start a friendship. My mother was also going to SPSCC. Later all three of us transferred to Saint Martin's at the same time. Leon was one of the rare people who comfortably befriended both myself at 16, and my mother at 42.
There he was, towering over a crowd of Japanese students with his huge smile lighting up the room. It was hard not to notice Leon, and impossible not to like him! Leon was one of those rare people who are outgoing and kind in a way that transcends the boundaries of age, culture, class, gender, and ethnicity. I do have many funny memories, like when I ran into him and his family at Lakefair where he pointed out how beautiful his teenage daughter was, then proceeded to tell me how he would knock out anyone who looked at her sideways. However this is more of an acknowledgement of what a wonderful warm human being he was, and how bitterly I regret losing contact in the years after we graduated. Leon I thought about you often. I pray your life continued to be full of love and fulfillment. Anyone who reads this... stop and tell your people. And Leon's family... He loved you so much! He talk about you all the time.

My uncle Leon would come home and load up his little brother Kevin's kids and take us to the Hunting Island beach and grill out right beside his truck. He always made us laugh and made sure we had a great time. He was one of the relatives that you looked forward to coming home. Him and aunt Rose. She always said Leon was her baby. Even though I only had the pleasure of seeing him a few times in life, he left a foot print on my heart. Continue to Rest uncle Leon we love you. Your niece Nisha.

During Richard's and my last visit, Leon was still humming when the music came on. He was restless, but as soon as he heard the beat, he started dancing and became calm.
What a special and genuinely good guy. He was always one of the first people I sought out at gatherings, because he had this gift of making people feel at ease, talking about anything and everything.
We are so very sorry about his passing.
Our condolences to Daniela, Saskia, Danika, and the rest of his family!

Unimposing and humble, Leon always had a welcoming spirit and big smile; a listening ear, a sense of calm, the heart of a peacemaker. You were so special Leon! We look forward to seeing you again, dancing with the heavenly band, singing all day long! ❤️Marsha

Leon, always in a good mood when we saw him, always joking. Our memories go back to the 90's when we met him and Daniela in Frankfurt. Leon swiftly drove their big family van through small German streets that were not built for American sized cars. Another memory revolves around New Year's Eve where he and Daniela were the "for sure company", for sure to stay up partying past midnight. And then Leon's 60th birthday, still dancing and loving to move with the music. We miss his happy company. Viola and Michael

I miss Leon. He had a smile that would light up a room. I remember him telling funny stories about his past experiences that made him laugh out loud. Leon had music pulsing through his veins. When music was playing he would either dance, tap his feet, or snap his fingers. It was apparent that he was a proud family man, through and through, always talking about his girls and Daniela. He had every reason to be proud. He was deeply cherished by his family and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
