Mr. Heimgartner was my kindergarten teacher at Gratwick school in North Tonawanda, NY in 1956. I belong to a group from that area and in the past few weeks many have shared wonderful memories of having Mr. Heimgartner as their teacher.

Norm was a most amazing man! Not only was he extremely well educated but his common sense approach and adept sense of humor meant he had the ability to deal with any situation. He was on the Gesell Institute National Lecture Staff when I became a member in 1984 and from that moment until a few months ago, he was a mentor, resource, explainer, role model, co-worker, and friend. And all these through his knowledge and his faith. I am sad that he cannot be any of those things anymore here on earth, which is a loss for all of us, but I do celebrate his reunion in heaven with his beloved Jackie. To his family, please accept my sympathies and know how much he was loved by so many.

I am very sorry for your loss. Norm was my first instructor for Gesell Development in the early 2000’s. I can still see his love and enthusiasm for young children. I have since given hundreds and hundreds of observations and I almost always recall a fun comment he made during his instruction time. I continue to use the Gesell today and am so grateful for Norm’s instruction and heart in that training! It made a big impact on me, and obviously everyone he met. I am praying for your comfort.

For my friend who will be remembered always. Your smile, your laughter, wisdom of language and world travel you shared with everyone. You would leave with one language and return with another, smiling all the way. May GOD take care of you and Jackie tighter now together as you would want. My heart is heavy but my spirt is still high with many wonderful memories of you, my friend.

I loved Norm dearly. We worked together for several years on the Tacoma Opera board and he was always so wonderfully informed and interesting both about about opera and his travels. I shall miss him so much.

My name is Mary Nielsen-Webster. I have worked for the physicians that took care of Mr. Heimgartner's eyes. I met him 25 years ago. We became instant friends and he wrote to me often about his beautiful orchids and care he gave the elephants while in Bejing. He was one of the nicest, most decent man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is gone but not forgotten. I will miss his letters and his visits. I too live in Olympia and was very pleased when he and his wife moved there. My best to his family. RIP my friend.

In the fall if 1958, I began kindergarten at Gratwick School in North Tonawanda,NY. My teachers's name was Mr.Norman Heimgartner. I believe this must be him, though no mention is made in the obituary of his teaching public school. It was very unusual to have a man as a kindergarten teacher, but I remember him as being wonderful to our class. And looking at his photo he looks to have hardly aged since the mental picture I have of him as a young man. Sixty - one years later I still remember him clearly and still think of him when I drive by his white house on Young Street in Tonawanda. Obviously, he made a big impression on me.

I met Norm as one of his therapists at Mother Joseph Care center following his bladder cancer diagnosis. I have seldom met such a positive and upbeat man; he was such a pleasure to work with!
We found we had something in common when I found out that he was a professor at UPS the same years that I was a student.
He was a hard worker in therapy and was able to return to his assisted living facility!
His family was also gracious and I’m praying for you all as you grieve the loss of your dad. Thanks for sharing him with me!

Norman was my advisor at UPS 1985-1987 as I earned my education degree. He was fun and inspiring, and coming to the department to consult with him was always a pleasure. I've thought of him often and fondly through the years. Aside from aducation, we enjoyed talking about our mutual love of classical music and choral singing.
Until I read his obituary this Sunday morning, I never knew he was born in Tonawanda! So was I, in 1948.
Deepest sympathies to the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, for the loss of a gentle, kind, dedicated man.

Norman was a lifelong friend of my father, Herman David Sidel, and I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was an usher at my parents' wedding and my dad so admired his work in Asia. He absolutely loved receiving letters from Norman from China and elsewhere around the world. I am so glad that the two of them talked on the phone one final time earlier this year.
Although I never met him, Norman was absolutely charming to me in June when I told him that my father had passed away. He seemed like a sweet and lovely man - my father never would have been friends with any other type.
Heartfelt condolences to your family. My mother, Enid Sidel, also sends her sympathies.
