I have so many fond memories of Sharon over the years.....perhaps a small one demonstrates Sharon's keen sense of humor. The last New Year's Party I attended was bash at the Shiloh Inn in Ocean Shores. Several Oly couples attended. The weather was terrible, 60 mph winds, rain like crazy... several of us ended up in the lounge watching the TV news. Oly reporter Keith Eldridge was reporting on the "beach" with wind blowing all around him...we thought he was crazy being out on the beach until Sharon came up and pointed to the parking lot where we saw Keith was between two parking lot plants microphone in hand....that was real fake news!

Sending much love to Aunt Sharon and to all of our family as we grieve this terrible loss, especially her beloved Allen. I have such found and fun memories of Aunt Sharon from when I was young, and more recently such dear memories of her outpouring of love for my daughter, Daphne. Rest in peace, Aunt Sharon.
Love,
Carly

Sharon and our father, Vito, were a great team! It is likely they are working on the strategy for the next election cycle.
Much love from the Chiechi Family

While providing computer support for the WA State Legislature, I worked with Sharon on a professional level. She was always very competent, very courteous, and very respectful of everyone. Beyond work, I knew her a little on a personal basis and was even more impressed. Her wonderful qualities were apparent through both her work and personal life.
Sharon was truly a gracious and caring person. She will be missed by many.

I’ve only known Sharon for a short period of time, I was one of her caregiver. To meet Sharon was an inspiration, a wonderful person Inside and out and a great human being.
I would wait every day for 5 o’clock in the morning so we can have our coffee together, sit and talk before I have to go back to work. My first thing when I came into the building was to go and check on Sharon, hear about her day, her concerns, the things that she cherished and loved. She was truly a remarkable person and I am privileged to have met her and spend time with her.
My deepest condolence sense to her loving family.
In Hebrew we say, Her soul would be bound by the bundle of life.

Alan, Sherie and I are so very sorry for your loss, and for the loss to the institution we love, the State House of Representatives. Your tender and loving tribute to Sharon evokes wonderful memories of that place, and the wonderfully talented and fascinating people who worked there - and that doesn’t even include the members themselves. I wasn’t fortunate to have worked with your bride sufficient to observe her many talents, but her respect and admiration was shared by all, including (or perhaps especially) by those on “the other side of the aisle.”
On a personal note, how lucky were you, and I...not just to find a fascinating place to work, but to discover there your life’s true love? Like Sherie and I, you two probably met “in a meeting.” A true Olympia Love Story.
We share your grief.
- Dwayne and Sherie (Story) Slate

I had known Allen Hayward as a worthy political opponent who understood all of the rules and made we Democrats work harder. I had seen Sharon as a Republican staff member for several years. Then I really learned to appreciate Sharon and her work when I became Speaker in 1983. She and Allen put the institution of the Legislature and its people first before any partisan considerations. Later (1990-1992) I worked for Governor Booth Gardner as his director of legislative and federal relations. It gave me even a better perspective about Sharon and the kind of person she was. I never saw or heard anyone say anything bad about her work or the kind of person we would all love to call a friend. Allen and Sharon became a great team. It was a pleasure to be in their company long after our careers in Olympia.
She will be well remembered. Unfortunately Patricia and I will be in Europe during the time of the two events honoring Sharon and won't be able to be there. Our thoughts of her and Allen will be with us, however.

I have such a love for this beautiful couple. They were each other's right and left hand. So many memories of Sharon and all she did to guide me in my time in the Legislature. Rest easy, Sharon. You have earned every precious moment you get to be in our Father's arms. Allen, I am so sorry for the loss of your best friend. Lifting you up in prayer. Sending you much love.

I first met Sharon in March 1988 when Debbie and I came to the state Capitol for KPQ Radio to do two days of news coverage during session. Sharon organized all our meetings with lawmakers. I was even introduced in caucus. She was the first person I met at the Capitol and the most friendliest. I had no idea then that I would later be working with her.
Sharon deeply cared about all the people around her. She nurtured everyone around her who she cared about, thus earning the nickname, "Mom." I will never forget her smile, her laugh and her sometimes stern "Mom" voice that kept us all in order. She was an amazing person and a wonderful friend. It's hard to imagine her not being with Allen. They were inseparable.
I will miss you, my friend. Love you both.

Sharon was a wonderful friend and mentor. As so beautifully stated in this memorial, she generously brought a helping hand to every situation -- whether it was preparing a meal for legislative candidates, brainstorming strategies for managing through the infamous House ties of 1999 and 2001, or helping a rookie let go, and replace, an L.A. Sharon and Allen were a formidable team and if you knew them, you loved them. Allen, my heart is with you and your family, may the memories you have, and those shared here, be a blessing.
