I always looked forward to conversations with John. The conversations always started about some issue related to special education and often ventured further afield. I will miss his knowledge, interest and experience voice speaking knowledge into situations and circumstances that surrounded our work. It was rare that John did not have an answer or thought based on his wealth of experience. John has always been a wonderfully giving person with such a kind, caring, interested disposition.

Spent many hours on many committees with John. Will forever be grateful for those opportunities.
Kids with disabilities throughout Washington State truly benefitted from John’s dedication. And-we all lost a good friend.

John and I have been friends and colleagues for 35 years. I miss him terribly, but have so many fun memories of him. The first day I met him was in 1984, he interviewed me for a job at NW ESD 189. Instead of the prescribed interview questions, he was much more interested in finding out if i was related to Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman vice presidential candidate! My mother's maiden name is Ferraro. I don't know how we got off on that, with John, it was always a conversation adventure! But the laughter went on from there. Hey, I got the job and a friend forever. My heart and hugs go out to his family and loved ones. I know life will not be the same without him here. I'm sorry I can't join you for his celebration of life, as I will be visiting Mama Ferraro. Peace, gale

I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with John at the beginning of my career in the Ferndale School District in 1978, as well as when I retired from my last position at OSPI in 2017. What I remember most about John was his incredibly witty sense of humor. I tried to visit with him as often as possible so I could listen to him discuss important topics of the day, always knowing that his one-of-a kind intelligent and funny insights were headed my way. I also admired his empathy for less the fortunate students in our k-12 system. I came across very few people in my career who cared more for our most vulnerable youth.
Lastly, I want the family to know that when John was first diagnosed with cancer, he walked into my office and asked me if I could drive him to his treatment sessions. Please know that I was extremely honored that he asked me to help.
I think about John often, and will remember him forever.

When I joined OSPI, John was one of the people who greeted me. He took the time to introduce himself, find out my interests, and then would bring me articles or information about those topics. I came to find out that John did this for everyone; he cared about those around him. John was a wealth of information, and used that experience and history to make the system and the world around him a better place. He is missed by many, and will be remembered for the good he did.

An Amazing human being. Proud to call him my father and he will be missed dearly. His second granddaughter was just born on 25 February and I know he would be ecstatic. We named her Blair Tessa John Bresko. Her older sister Braelyn misses her Grandpa and she will be able to tell Blair all about him when she’s old enough. Blessed he was part of all our lives. Take care Dad, we will always love you!
