Mieke's passing has affected all of us in different ways. We are so very saddened for the family who has lost their "beloved". I just discovered her chosen name means "beloved"--how very appropriate! She was beloved by so very many people.
Although I have wanted to honor her beautiful life by sharing my heart through words, words have been reluctant to come; as if writing them down would make her passing more real--it does. And I apologize that now that I begin, there are so very many words. A full book would not do her beautiful life justice. Someone mentioned sharing memories. I have a select few. I have to keep repeating "her beautiful life" not because it was easy or without trial even before her last trial with cancer. But SHE was always beautiful in the midst of the life, the trial. And she loved to bring beauty to share with others-leading worship with her voice, playing the organ, decorating the church for worship and special occasions, cooking, serving--always with her smile.
Mieke once explained to me (at the old dairy house) that the distasteful smell did not come from the cows (though they made their own challenges), but from the stinky silage they ate. And THEN they turned that stink into the beautiful white milk we love. That sounded profound; guess life is like that. She loved to teach others about her animals... and no one looked more glamorous or elegant than dear Mieke in her muddy rubber muck-out boots; smiling her smile while handing out yummy ice cream to wide-eyed, anxious preschoolers.
She always looked good--maybe because she always had that smile: the biggest, most genuine smile--pain, worry and all. But for her there was always HOPE! It sustained her and we pray that same hope will sustain all those she leaves behind. God sent her eagles to sing for her; He brought the cross in their trees to rise high above their home to give her focus. And I had an experience after her passing that broke through my grief and encouraged my heart. I hope you will understand what I am trying to share.
One Sunday morning, while worshipping the Lord we love so much, I noticed many beautiful small rainbows gracing the Holy family banner and the Baby Jesus on the front wall. Other rainbows were around it. The rainbows were being formed as the morning sun shone through the beautiful stained-glass windows at the back of the sanctuary. The beautiful windows in the front above the cross are visible to all, but many may not even know of the rear window. Please look the next time you are able. The window speaks of the light of the Gospel--good news of the Son. The rainbows that morning spoke to me of the promises of God being true, and one of Mieke's favorite words--HOPE!
Some of us know who is responsible for those beautiful stained glass windows in our sanctuary. The designer and donor did not want to be publicly honored. Did I mention that Mieke was very humble and did not want praise? But dear Mieke, I want your family to know that your beautiful life, your strength, your love of beauty, your firm hope in the Lord will always remain in our hearts, in our Church, in our lives. I will miss you, friend. You were so brave and so strong. I will see you again. Enjoy the reward of a life lived for the Lord and for family. They are your beautiful legacy.
