All my sympathies to his wife Mary and to his sons and to his brother Steve whom I have met , I was so sorry to hear of Garn's passing ....It was a great pleasure to have met him and his brother and to have shared some very special times in Sligo. These were not always easy times and were certainly an unusual experience for young travellers .Garn or Gary as we knew him became part of Sligo and I believe Sligo became part of him ...something you don't forget easily anyway !....his lovely Art and his own insights and wit are well remembered here . It was great to renew our acquaintance after many years on Facebook and I and my sons enjoyed the conversations and funny observations which we will surely miss. These sons were very young children when Garn and Steve were here ,they used to babysit them !....but they felt at ease with his easy wit and wry sense of humour just as their father had ,and time and distance were no obstacle to a continuing appreciation of a special person .....I send all our condolences , Ar dheis Dego raibh a anam ..Janet Chrystal(Foley)

Garn you are one of the finest people I have ever met! We lived in a very small house at 803 Westport Rd. in Kansas City,Mo.We spent many days and hours listening to our favorite music and will play it again in heaven! In this life he was a devout liberal and me a devout conservative! Garn you are the greatest and I will miss you but you taught me so many things about life! God Speed!

I am very saddened to learn of Garn's untimely death. We met in the early 90s at Designers Service Bureau where I worked and he would frequent. He was always happy with quick wit and a laugh, one of my favorite customers! We had contact over the years through various projects and I always enjoyed our conversations. My condolences to all the family, I know he will be sorely missed. Lori Heckman

Truly blessed and enriched to have known and worked with Garn in the MiT program, and to watch him teach. His depth of insight and perspective and knowledge and teaching skill made me proud to call him teacher. I loved the jokes and quips we shared; it was clear how much he cared...about kids, about the future, about life and living it well with a cheeky grin. Truly he sucked the marrow out of life and has me saying “Garn, I hardly knew ye’” as I read the depth and breadth of his life journey. My father spent 40 years in printing and typesetting, so I truly appreciate the labor and skill Garn had and employed; Others I know who collaborated with him in that role still have high regard for the quality of his work, his work ethic and his personal integrity. To have given so much, done so much and having done it with humor and a joy for life is to have lived a good and memorable life...thanks, Garn, for sharing you with me, others and the future through students. You’re an inspiration to this man who truly respects you.

I consider Garn my first mentor. He was working as a pressman at Olympia Copy and Printing when I was hired in the summer of 1980. He taught me how to run a press, how to take time out for "a spot of tea" at 10:00am, and what mattered most- humor with a touch of sarcasm. I will always think of Garn and his twinkling eye- you always knew he was up to something. In later years I was grateful to know Garn as a co-worker again, and as a compadre in the long list of printing friends in my life.
Best wishes to his family, we are all so fortunate to have known your wonderful Garn.

Mary, Andrew and Ian, thank you for sharing Garn with me. Garn was truly a Renaissance man. He was the most charitable person I've known. I will miss his today in history and obscure facts of history at our Wednesday breakfast. He loved and was proud of his family.
