Like so many others, Bette inspired me to be the best child nutrition professional I could be. She encouraged me EVERY step. I am so grateful.

I was fortunate to work for Bette at Child Nutrition services from 1995 until she retired. She was a work horse and a half, but never asked anything of you that she was not willing to do herself. Sometimes she was a challenge because I would find myself insisting: Bette, let ME do that–that is my job. She was one of the kindest people I ever worked with, and even in the midst of rush times, she would still take the time to make sure that you or your family were doing OK. She had a mind like a steel trap, never forgetting someone’s name, the name of their spouse, and/or children, & remembered details like a pro. Probably just as well that she was a registered dietician and not a police officer–the criminals wouldn’t stand a chance! If you wanted to see Bette’s face totally light up, just mention a member of her family, be it husband, children, or grandchildren–she ADORED them all. Bette had the most infectious laugh I ever heard, and she was best at laughing at herself! I never heard an unkind word cross her lips and she never participated in any kind of office drama. She was a truly great person and did a wonderful job for the children of Washington.

I used to live around the corner from the Brandis family in Richland. Ms. Bette was always so gracious, friendly & hospitable. She treated me like a member of her family & I loved her dearly for it. I regret that I lost contact with her over the years, but she touched a lot of lives & will be greatly missed. RIP Ms. Bette.

Bette was a co-worker with me for the 9 years I worked for Child Nutrition Services. She always had a smile and kind word for those around her. What a special lady she was! Sorry to miss the memorial. My prayers are with her family at this time.

Bette and Paul were our neighbors in Richland for many years. Bette was the most gracious and kind neighbor anyone could ask for. I have fond memories of the many driveway conversations we shared about family, kids, and eventually grandchildren. May the peace of the Lord be with you and your family!

Bette was one of my dear Child Nutrition Mentors and friend. I learned so much about School Nutrition from Bette as she had the passion and love of her job through her classes she taught and the encouragement to do the best in your job. She gave me the confidence and support I needed to become WSNA president in 2003-04. I will never forget how she embraced me and how proud she was to get me to this level. Bette’s legacy of life will always be remembered by everyone’s lives she had touched.

Bette was my childhood friend.
I spent many days and nites with Bette, Brad and Mrs. Gierke . We all lived on East Bay Drive. I have such fond memories of playing in the neighborhood and spending nites at their house. Those were the days!!!
Bette and I had to “Dust ” after school before she could play.
When I married after high school Bette and Mrs. Gierke gave me a wedding shower and I moved to San Diego where my husband was in .
the navy
Mrs. Gierke keep my dog, Punchie, who she loved very much, till I returned a few months later.
We lost touch for some years but reunited when we had a Roosevelt Grade School Reunion a few years ago. We kept in touch occasionaly, but not enough!
I attended both Brad and Mrs. Gierke’s funerals.
I am so sorry Bette passed I did not know she was ill .
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
I hope to attend the memorial.

My beautiful friend, Bette, will be remembered with great fondness,
deep gratitude, and loving thoughts. As teenage neighbors, we became “BFF”s. We participated in each other’s weddings, Bette telling me that my marriage would NOT be legal if she were not a part of it! I’m sure she was right because the marriage lasted 51 years. Bette was such an encourager, and helped me see myself through her eyes, giving me courage to take on things I might have not allowed myself to do. She was inspiring in every way, and how
proud you, her family, must be to have been a part of her many accomplishments. I’m proud to have known her, and will carry her spirit in my heart for all my days, until we meet again.
May all your good memories comfort and bless you.

I was saddened to read the obituary for Bette in the TC Herald today, and my heart goes out to Paul, Andrea and Jason. Bette had the most joyous laugh, and she used it often when she and I would get together. What good visits we had! She had to go to Mead, WA one late afternoon to give a talk, and asked me to ride along just for the company. We talked and laughed all the way up and back…until we got to Eltopia on the way home very late at night. That’s when we noticed the gas tank gauge was on empty! She forgot to fill up in Spokane. Luck was with us and we did make it 17 miles to the nearest gas station near Pasco. God bless her. Shalom

Bette hired me in 1977 in Richland. She was a very caring boss. She taught me how to be a better cook and eventually, a kitchen manager. I have very fond memories of her.
