Obituary of Margit Bird

Margit Bird died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in Chehalis, Washington. She was 79. Born October 21, 1934, in Jagerndorf, Czechoslovakia, she was the daughter of Gustav Gottwald and Julie Gottwald. After World War II, she immigrated to Montreal, Canada, where she worked as a dress designer. It is in Montreal that she met Arthur Derek Bird and they were married on September 14, 1957. They moved to the U.S. in 1958. Margit and Derek lived in many locations across the U.S. and settled in Seattle in 1971 with their three daughters. Margit was a devoted mother and wife. She was an advocate for conscientious development, greenbelt preservation, and local environmental issues. Margit helped make the world a better place with her love, compassion, tenacity, spirited nature and good humor. She will be dearly missed by those who had the good fortune to know her. Margit is survived by her husband, Derek Bird; and her daughters, Alison Bird (partner Elizabeth Johnson), Marianne Pettijohn (Nick), Sandra Bird; and granddaughter, Allie Pettijohn. The family would like to thank Peace of Mind Affordable Home Care Services for their years of loving care, and Providence Hospice for their support. Memorial donations may be made to benefit Northwest Harvest. Please leave memories of Margit or condolences for her family in the Guestbook below.
