Obituary of Cynthia Ashcraft

Cynthia French Ashcraft February 4, 1927 – June 22, 2013 Cynthia passed away June 22, 2013, surrounded by family, in Olympia, WA. She was born in Seattle on February 4, 1927. Cynthia grew up in West Seattle on Jacobsen Road across the street from Alki Beach. She graduated from West Seattle High School and worked as a soda jerk while in school. She attended University of Washington in the Architecture department. After being set up by her older sister, Suzanne, and Suzanne’s best friend Pat Ashcraft, Cynthia found the love of her life, and in November 1950, she married Wilbur Ashcraft. After they wed, they moved to Simpson State Salmon Hatchery on the Satsop River in Mason County. Together, they raised three children, Sue, Scott, and Joan. After living at various hatcheries and Seattle, the Ashcraft family moved to West Olympia with a view of Budd Inlet in 1960. Cynthia loved to volunteer and help wherever she could. She volunteered at the Olympia Junior Programs where she became President; Olympia Orthopaedic Guild; and various schools in the Olympia School District – L.P. Brown and Capital High School as examples. Cynthia was an avid bridge player and belonged to bridge clubs. She also loved to read and was a member of book groups. She regularly swam, loved to ski, and enjoyed taking cruises. Cynthia is survived by her three children Sue (Winston) Johnson, Scott Ashcraft, and Joan Ashcraft; two grandchildren Michael (Morena) Timm and Paul (Jolene) Timm; and four great-grandchildren Elena and Mayra Timm; and Kaleb and Kameron Timm, all of whom live in the Olympia area. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Wilbur Carr Ashcraft. A Celebration of Cynthia’s life will take place this summer at Beach Bottom on the Day It Doesn’t Rain.
