I met Janet about 8 years ago as her neighbor, and later as her handyman. Janet was a very special person; kind, compassionate, and extremely personable, but ready to speak up assertively if important principles were being violated. As others have said, she always made me feel liked and important. Reading about her life of good works doesn’t surprise me at all. I’ll miss Janet very much.

It’s hard to put into words how I feel about Janet because she was such an inspiration to me. She was someone I respected and admired greatly. As a fellow Stephen Minister and Past Moderator, her wisdom was welcomed and valued. When Janet spoke, everyone listened. She is greatly missed, but she will never be forgotten.

Janet was an active force in the Wildwood Neighborhood Association and a shining presence at our many board meetings as well as our social activities.

I always felt safe around Janet because she said what she thought and did what she said.
I met her when she worked at the Office of Adult Literacy where she managed the volunteer literacy program and the family literacy programs. More than a decade after she retired, the local program directors and staff were still singing her praises. She protected the programs from lots of hair-brained ideas, and finally she chose to quit her job rather than carry out a directive that she knew would severely damage the programs, and she was right in her assessment. She always was and will forever be their champion.
I loved going on multi-day monitoring visits to eastern WA with her, because she was such a hoot. We laughed and talked and “set the world aright” in all that time in the car. I feel blessed to have had some time with her, learning from her wisdom, compassion, commitment and grace. She was good people, and the world’s bleaker with her passing.
My favorite of her stories is the one she tells where LBJ’s daughter, Luci, is pledging the sorority that Janet was in. You need to imagine this story being told in Janet’s best Texas patrician accent. At Luci’s pledging interview, one of the women in the sorority asks: “What does your Daddy do?” Luci answers, “He’s the President.” To which the clueless interviewer asks: “The President of what?” And Luci says, “The President of the United States”. I just love this story because it shows privilege for what it is and isn’t.
My daughter had been to Janet’s house a couple of times when she was very young. I told her that Janet had passed not really expecting her to remember Janet. “Oh, she was the lady with the big Raggedy Ann doll”, she said. “Yes”, I said, thinking, and so, so much more.
Gentle skies and smooth winds, Janet.

Janet’s life was a blessing, a gift to us all and truly about love and service. I cherish wonderful memories of her friendship, participating in a book group with her for years. She will be deeply missed by her loved ones and all whose lives she touched. She was a lovely person.
