Obituary of John Philip Alkins

John Philip Alkins “Brother John” “Brother John” was born July 17, 1954 in La Marque, Texas to Jeanne and Reverend David S. Alkins. He died April 29, 2013 at his home in Olympia, Washington. Brother John was an accomplished musician, pianist and composer. His music enlightened many people with his performances, sound tracks and recordings. He was active in international music organizations and a pioneer in bringing world-class musicians to Olympia. John was a devoted father to Miles Alkins, Olympia, WA, who was the great joy of his life. He is also survived by father, Reverend David S. Alkins (Joan), Seaview, WA; brother, Peter Alkins (Rhonda), Olympia, WA; sister, Mary Gehling (Guy), Manzanita, OR; and other loved family members. Brother John graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1972 and The Evergreen State College in 1976, majoring in music ethnology. He helped hundreds of people in the South Sound during his 25-year career as a social worker, counseling families and children. He was well respected by his clients and other social and mental health professionals. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Walla Walla, WA, and lifelong member of the youth group “Croutons.” Brother John was a friend to all and loved by everyone who had the privilege to know him.
