I spent 6 months in Baghdad with Doug. It was a serious time but it was also a time of friendship and respect for the superb job Doug and all the surgeons were doing for our Soldiers and allies. We had many serious conversations and also had many fun conversations. Doug could and did laugh frequently and the time went by faster because of his good spirit. I've thought of him often over the years and wish his Family solace and peace now.

I first met Doug in 1998 when like so many others he used his skilled hands to return my mobility. We shared a love of fishing, hunting and early American history spending many enjoyable hours in those pursuits. A totally unselfish man who loved being a husband, father and soldier. He said the highlight of his career was serving his country and soldiers in war. I along with others will sorely miss him.

This is Lynn Stratford and I was a classmate and friends with Doug while at Duniway grade school in Portland. Like Patsy, it was good to see and talk with Doug at our 57th year reunion. Doug and most of us, were born in 1943, the only year the zinc/steel penny was issued.
What I remember most about Doug was his smile. It was distinct and enchanting. To me, it defined his cheerful and engaging personality.
I am sad at Doug's passing and give my best wishes to his family and those from Duniway who associated closely in our formative years.

Doug,
Thank you for reconnecting with me in Portland a couple months ago at Eastmoreland GC. We hadn't seen each other since summer 1957...but, then, what's 62 years between friends? You, Dick Boyd, Stuart Cohen, Dick Mimnaugh, Scot MacEwan, Jerry Del Valle, Joan Hartley... I mean, life––in that long moment––could not have been better for me.
Note: no one's been more blessed than me, Doug, and you were always a part of that blessing. Today I had another conversation with Dave Long and felt again the marvel of the bond we all shared by being at Duniway when we were and making our way as athletes trying to become like the people we admired.
You made the cut, my friend, as has Dave Long. What a gift to know you. I expect to see you soon. Get us a tee time.
Semper Fi,

Doug...as we called him back then, was one of my first boyfriends in grade school at Duniway in Portland, OR.
What a nice person he was. I am so very glad I got to see and talk with him at our Duniway reunion last August.
God Bless all his family.
