Ken and Pat Remine have been treasured Harstine Island neighbors and friends for 43 years. From their early days with the family camping in the trailer, they loved the beach. Ken raked the large rocks away so they could gather around their driftwood fires to enjoy fresh clams and oysters with cheap boxed wine. Once they built their house, Ken graduated to true chef, introducing us to the use of spent, dried Tabasco chili flakes straight from the factory to spice up sautéed clams, graduating to wine from the bottle. As first president of the “Peale Passage Homeowners’ Association” through its early years, Ken kept us well organized and set a tone for neighborliness and looking after each other. He walked all lots after storms to report on damage, kept the gate operating, cleared downed trees, filled potholes, and anything else that needed to be done - all with great humor and kindness. Ken and Pat were enthusiastic early participants in the “Peale Passage Pirate’s Parade and Potluck” bringing owners of 13 lots together for a motley parade of “pirate ships” (kayaks, rafts, anything floating) that he would pull using his dinghy and trolling motor. Pat set the tone in an early parade dressed as Cleopatra, wrapped in a gold curtain with full curly locks, lying relaxed in the dinghy, eating grapes.
Ken lived a full life with gusto and kindness. We will always treasure his friendship and will do our best to help fill the huge gap he has left behind as our neighbor.
We know he is resting in peace, likely with an endless supply of nice wine and clams sautéed with Tabasco chili flakes. We are blessed that Pat and their wonderful family will remain our Harstine neighbors for years to come.
Thank you Ken for the impact you have had on us!
With deepest sympathy,
Sally & Warren Jewell

“You’re so worthwhile.” Twenty years ago, this month, Ken spoke those words to me when I was going through a difficult and vulnerable time.
Often, when I visited Harstine, he and I would talk. He’d ask questions, listen closely, and share wisdom. I’ll miss his love and support. I’ll cherish our memories and will celebrate his life with delicious food and joyful laughter.
