Obituary of Amill Yakovich

None Amill Yakovich, 87, a resident of Lacey since 1980, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2005. He was born on September 20, 1918 in Roslyn, Washington to George and Pauline Yakovich. The family moved to Aberdeen in 1921. Amill attended school at Wishkah Valley and helped with the family dairy farm. In January of 1941, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and was assigned to the famous 6th Marines 2nd Division. During basic training, World War II broke out and he was sent home before being shipped out to fight in the war. During that 10 day leave, he married Dorothy Helen McKay on April 11, 1942. It would be 3 ½ years of front-line service before he returned. When the war ended he was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor in battle and an honorable discharge. At the end of the war, Amill returned to Aberdeen to start life with Dorothy. He bought a dump truck and went into business for himself. He ran his business for more than 20 years before going to work for Friend & Rikalo as shop foreman. He worked there until his retirement in 1979. When he wasn’t at work, he was busy at home. Amill was an accomplished carpenter and built 4 homes for the family in Aberdeen. In his retirement, he enjoyed helping his children with various building projects. He also enjoyed working on cars, reading and traveling with Dorothy, his wife of 63 years. Amill was preceded in death by his son, Don, on March 11, 2005. He was also preceded by his parents and brothers, George, Tony, Nick, Joe, and Gene. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Diane Hart (Mike), of Olympia; his son, Dennis (Karen), of Port Angeles; daughter-in-law, Jeanne, of Lacey; grandchildren, Keri Hart, Eric (Lisa), Janelle, Scott (Rene), Kyle Yakovich, and Kelsey Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Phern Yakovich, of Olympia and Katherine Yakovich, of Aberdeen; also 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Amill will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. at the Masonic Center, 521 North Street SE, Tumwater. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Memorial Park, Tumwater.
