Mabel O'Hare

Obituary of Mabel O'Hare

none Mabel was born in Olympia on August 16, 1911 to Joseph and Florence Clyde. She lived there a few years before moving to Montana, where her parents tried farming, but grasshoppers destroyed their harvest, so they decided to move back to Olympia. The family model T'd their way from Montana to Olympia, taking the Model T up the steep hill by West Bay Drive, they all of a sudden started rolling backward into the water and lost all of there belongings. As the family members walked along West Bay Drive, a man picked up Mabel's family and gave Mabel's father a job and got the family settled in a home. Mabel was in the high school orchestra, achieving many awards for her violin playing. She graduated from Olympia High School in 1929 and went to two years of business college. She fell in love with Joe O'Hare's old model T Ford, and later married him and had two children; son, Dennis, wife Jo and grandchildren, Brady O'Hare, Tracy O'Hare-Fidler, both of Bellingham; and daughter, Marilyn (Moe), Olympia. Mabel and Joe O'Hare had a successful store at Tumwater Square during the war. Mabel and Joe owned several stores throughout their lives. Mabel always helped her husband with their grocery business and always shared an interest in her children's school and sport events. She was a photographer and won several awards at the Thurston County Fair. Mabel started running in her retirement years, competing in the mile and two mile run, and holding the record in those races for her age bracket. It was amusing, because at that time, she was running down the street in a skirt. The neighbors wondered what was going on at the O'Hare's house. Joe, her husband made her buy her first running outfit. She competed up until last year, running the track and field events at the Senior Games at North Thurston High School. She holds the record for the mile and two mile in her age category. She won many turkeys during the Turkey Trot at Evergreen College. She has collected medals, trophies, t-shirts and many medallions for the last 29 years. We thank her son, Dennis O'Hare for helping train his mother and supporting her passion for running and keeping her physically fit all those years. Thanks to Hospice for the caring and support they gave Mabel. "She has been a great role model for many young athletes." We would like to thank Toni De SanNicolas, her caregiver, for her pleasant personality and loving care, and the Providence SoundHomeCare and Hospice team for their excellence of compassion.
