Obituary of Kary Wilson Hyre

Kary Wilson Hyre, 76, of Olympia, Washington, passed away at home on June 24, 2017. He was born in Seattle, Washington. He earned bachelor degrees in Sociology and Organ from Whitman College, and a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. Kary’s life was spent in the passionate pursuit of two careers: protecting the rights of vulnerable people and creating the music of the church. After a career in government in Wisconsin, he was Washington Long Term Care Ombudsman from 1989 to 2006, working tirelessly to improve the lives of nursing home residents. He served as organist and choirmaster for United Churches of Olympia, 1988-2006, and St. John’s Episcopal Church, 2006-2015. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie McMartin Hyre; and parents, George and Margaret Hyre. He is survived by his wife, Janet, and beloved cousins.
