Anna Holm

Obituary of Anna E. Holm

Anna E. Holm passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017 from complications caused by stroke, dementia and a broken hip. She is survived by her four children, Dan, Richard, Meridith and David; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin V. Holm; and brother, Lars Erkers. Anna had been living in the Memory Care Unit of Redmond Heights in Redmond, Washington, at the time of her death. As the daughter of Swedish immigrants Olaf and Signe Erkers, Anna grew up in Tacoma, Washington. During her life, she basically knew two homes, her parents’ house, located in East Tacoma, and the home next door, built by her husband. Anna lived in this family home until 2013, when for health reasons, she moved in with her son, Dan, and his wife, Orine. Anna graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942, then went to work for Nalley’s Fine Foods in the secretarial pool. She married Alvin prior to him heading off to the war and celebrated nearly 60 years of marriage. In the late 1940s, Anna stopped working to raise her family. She returned to work in the 60s at Kelly-Farquhar Frozen Foods to supplement the family income. The plan was to build a summer cabin at Lake St. Clair on property her parents had purchased in the late 1930s. Anna spent many summers “at the lake” and it was always a special place for her. After Kelly-Farquhar, Anna began work for PLU as an administrative assistant in the college of Education. She worked there until approximately 1989. PLU was upgrading their offices to use PCs and she wanted no part of it…so she retired. As far as she was concerned, typing should be done on a typewriter, preferably IBM Selectric. Anna loved to crochet, knit and work in her yard. She always had a supply of afghans to give out to family members and her friends. Her weekly hair appointments were an important part of her routine. She looked forward to those “comb outs.” During the spring and summer months, she could always be found pulling weeds, raking and hanging her laundry on the clothes line. At Christmas, her favorite past time was cooking up a batch/batches of peanut brittle. Everyone looked forward to this annual treat. The rest of the year was spent baking cookies, testing recipe after recipe. Her kindness to all will be missed by many. Anna has requested her ashes be spread on the Lake St. Clair family property.
