Obituary of Noble Richard Carroll

NOBLE RICHARD CARROLL (Nobel) Nobel Carroll, 90, of Olympia, died January 26, 2006, at Providence St. Peter Hospital, of congestive heart failure. He was born January 20, 1916 in Bossburg, Washington and was the youngest of 10 children born to William Henry Parker Carroll and Hattie Harriet Brittain Carroll. Preceding him in death were his parents and his siblings, Lillian Burnside (Earl), Clinton W., Catherine Blanche, Wesley Brittain, Laurence, Lester, Harry, Malcolm (John), and Irma Mae. He is survived by his second wife, Marie R. of 24 years, who will return to Billings, Montana later; his four children from his first wife, Eloise J. Carroll of Lacey, Richard I. (Jennifer), Seattle, Susan L. (Hugh Reasin), Seattle, Melody J. Helland, Yelm, Nancy L. Harry(Jim), Olympia; and his only grandchild, Kayla Rae Helland, Yelm, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He also leaves behind his two stepsons; Wayne Hoffman, Billings, Montana and Gary Hoffman, Ketchikan, Alaska, and many other members of Marie’s family. Nobel grew up in Bossburg and Kettle Falls, Washington, where he attended high school. Some of his fondest memories were of fishing the Columbia River at Kettle Falls. He attended one year of college at the University of Idaho in Moscow, before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served stateside from 1940-1945. As a sergeant he trained airplane crews on the use of the newly developed Norton Bomb Sight for the B-17 bomber. After returning from the service he operated a service station with his brother, John, in Spokane for many years. He met and married Eloise Frye in 1948 and they owned a small apartment house there for some time. He loved to hunt, fish, camp, and play cards in his younger years with friends and family. The family moved to the Seattle area in 1962 to manage a mobile home park they co-owned with brother, John and their aunt, Merle Brittain Varner and her husband, Elmer. He also worked for the Boeing Co. at their Auburn, Washington plant. In 1967 they moved to Olympia where they purchased and developed the Wildwood Mobile Home Park which they operated for many years. Nobel did most of the work himself, being very capable in plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, concrete work, and whatever else needed doing. The family later moved to five acres in the Boston Harbor area where they had horses for daughters Melody and Nancy. Nobel enjoyed gardening and the family has happy memories of backpacking and trips to the ocean. Nobel retired to Arizona in 1981 after a divorce, and here he met and married his second wife, Marie Hoffman. They spent 20 years in Cottonwood, Arizona where they purchased a mini-storage business, loved their home, Boston Terrier dog, reading and traveling with their 5th wheel trailer to parts of the southwest, with summers spent in Montana and Washington State. He returned to Olympia with Marie to an independent living apartment to be closer to both families, where they lived for the last 4 ½ years. At his request, he was cremated and there will be no funeral or memorial service. We will all miss him dearly.
